It followed me home (Part 2)

I think this is an agdor but not sure how old . Looks great and still has a little bit of the old label on it. Any idea on how to figure out how old?

Thank you that one is a little cleaner and a little smaller but that's what I thought thanks for the pic.

I had a good morning.

68 pound machinist vise with 6" jaws and a 1" screw for $20. A pair of 14" Heller NuCut files in good shape. And something I really needed, a Magna-Matic blade balancer. I sharpen lawnmower blades on the side for friends and family. This is a $200 tool that I got for $4.

Was some kind of firearm involved in that transaction? :D

I have a Heller NuCut that was my dads. Best file I've ever used. Great finds

That vice is a score!

Yeah. I love it. I had a 4" JET machinist vise on my bench. That is now relegated to portable vise duties. This thing is pretty hefty. I have some heavier blacksmith leg vises but this is all I'll ever need for a bench vise.

No firearms. Just a smile and good timing. Those Heller NuCuts are good files. When I saw these were just dirty not worn I decided to grab them. $1.50/ a piece.

That was a great price for that vise. Is there a name on it? Was it made in the USA?

No name on it. Sticker has been peeled off. It's probably Taiwanese.

Does anyone recognize the swivel base lock levers? They're unusual.

No, I wasn't going to say it but you already know, that is a Chinese vise. However, still good as a working tool and a great deal at $20. Although not collectable, they are perfect users as long as people don't smash on them. Firm grip yes, anvil no.

BTW, that balancer is awesome. I have never seen one before.

I think it's too old to be from mainland China but Taiwan is sure a possibility. Have you seen a Chinese vise with lock levers like this one, JB?

I gave a friend a refurbished axe yesterday as a gift. He was pleased with it. We were talking in his shop and he gave me this:

.
Craftsman boy's axe. Original handle.
It was hanging high on a beam in the out building and got overlooked for a couple of months since he had moved in. He used it removing stump roots and the head pulled out.
It's got someone's initials on it. My friend assumes it belonged to the previous owner.
He Insisted I take it. The head is in good shape but the electrical tape makes me wonder.
I guess we traded.

For many years I had a Wilton 4” model 9(?)00 vice. Shaped like a bullet. A neighbor’s father passed away and I purchased it for $70. Not a steal but I didn’t feel bad about it as he thought it was high. The guy that bought my house asked for it to be included. Anyway, since then I have run a Thai made 4” that I picked up used. It accepts pounding and torque and hasn’t let me down.

It’s not pretty but it holds stuff real tight. I would use that 6” vice if/until it shows wear.
Oh, those are nice Heller NuCut files as well.

I would like a leg/post vice at some point...

Sears used that color on their Craftsman axes for many years during the 50's & 60's (maybe into the 70's) I've seen them both with convex cheeks (older ones) and flat cheeks (newer ones). Obviously I think higher of the old ones with the convex cheeks. I'm not sure who made them but my guess would be Vaughan.

Does it have two locking levers? That would probably be a good sign. The locking levers like that I have seen on Record vice's also. Pretty sure that is not a record though.
