It followed me home (Part 2)

Got these at the local antique store. I don't have a cruiser yet, so I couldn't resist

I didn't get a particularly good price on the axe head, but I was able to talk down the price on the knife and axe combined. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the knife. 140 for the pair

The only thing I would add to quinton's perfect double bit is this "Nothing as sweet as a WESTERN PATTERN Kelly Perfect double bit with phanton bevels"

True, and the western pattern is my favorite double bit pattern!

When I was growing up, there was a phantom bevel Kelly in every wood pile. Single bits were rare around here.

That's a good looking Kelly Perfect. Great haul all around. I would bet the Perfect had been hafted and used.

The thing I like about the Western pattern is the long toe. When bucking a long toe cuts the underside deeper and makes the whole process easier.

After taking a brass brush to it I can see it has been sharpened so it probably was hafted and used a little.

These followed me home this past weekend. The KK double and the huge single bit my wife brought home to me....

That knife looks like a puma to me ( but I can't see the tang stamp )

Fantastic haul JB...the fourth axe down in your first pic looks amazing.

It is a good one, a Flint Edge Connie on a 30" original handle. The best one for condition is the Dayton with tape, another Flint Edge that is also stamped Bell Systems. Head and handle are near perfect.

For sure. Caught me eye too. JB is that from one or more trips out?

Seeing this renews my hope that there is still good stuff to find out there.

I manage an Ag retail plant in Eastern IL, located in a real small town. We have been doing some spring cleaning this week in a storage building that has been collecting odds and ends for 60 years. Earlier this week, an old Craftsman axe head followed me home. Hardly used, no hammer marks and just a little mushrooming. Then, today, I picked an interesting piece of of a shelf. I almost immediately saw the little anvil, and then recognized the horseshoe shape. It is a blacksmith trade sign that would hang on a rod over the door of a blacksmith shop. There was a blacksmith in town into the first half of the 20th century, just down the street. Coincidentally, I was recently in the shop of a 89 year old farmer who as a youngster, went to the blacksmith shop with his dad to purchase tools when the blacksmith closed. he has a few big vises, a huge drill press and a very old welder that looks like a wooden box (all items he still uses in his shop today). Those are my treasures for the week, thanks for looking!

I love how deep the hardened bit is, what a nice axe head. Those US made Craftsman axe heads may be the best value going in vintage heads. Very high quality but without the top tier collectible price tag.

Now that blacksmith sign is something else. If I found that it would make my year. I would even willingly buy a reproduction just because it would be so cool to hang it up. That is something that I would never consider selling, but even if I had to I would sell it for a very precious price. What a treasure.

I usually don't buy these as they are less common and tend to be over priced in these parts. I have seen $100 price tags on wrecked fire axes just because they have the word "fireman" attached to them. This was a steal though at $15 and it is all original with a tight handle. The point is even unabused, the most common flaw on these things. People seem to thing that it is a pick axe and I always see them chipped off or mushroomed flat. The only thing that would make this better is if the label were intact. I was happy to get this.

Warren A&T, 6lb head on a 36" handle.

For some reason Photobucket won't rotate the stamp picture.
