It followed me home (Part 2)

Bob, the exposed top plate with nails from the removed wall and the hanging block and shackle are a nice touch. When the time and money allow I would encourage you to put a small kitchen upstairs. At my age, I now think about things like having to use the stairs for the beer and chili.

Absolutely!

But here's a funny thing - women are easier to build for. Surprisingly they are better at making up their mind when it comes to building a house. The man knows he's going to get overruled anyway. And the women have no inclination to try to be more manly than their builder. I always liked building for women. And building for lawyers is good, too. But stay the heck away from doctors. Engineers can be hit and miss. The more involved the worse they are.

True DAT! Until they run out of funds. Then it's the cold shoulder. I hate the cold shoulder.. Especially from a woman.

I did the minimum taking that wall out. IIRC I was going to cut those nails off. Needed a stronger light so I bent a nail into a hook to hang a light from. Ended up making "hooks" out of the rest. Very handy. Eventually got overhead lights in both sides. I've never used the block. It was a gift from a friend (maybe from an old barn?). Thought it looked neat hanging up.

Not a bad idea. Was also thinking about hiring a 20 something year old female maid/cook that could bring up what I wanted.:D

Well, if ya bring her home, you'll need to post pics of 'er laid out on the dining room table. :D

I kid, I kid. Well,... unless she's hot. :D

I love the way this thread has side-tracked! But you know beer and chili being handy makes another important thing convenient for us oldies; water closet facilities that aren't down a flight of stairs or at other end of the house. Having a cedar hedge beside the garage was always my idea of convenient although the vegetation there inevitably never seemed to grow well.

Bob, I like your idea better ! When a guy gets old his first thoughts are about beer, chili and a place to relieve himself. Sad

We'd best move this 'old fart' end of the sidetrack of this thread over somewhere else. And wherever that is make sure I know the location. Kids are always looking for advice and obviously some of it they're gonna have to learn entirely on their own. 30-40 years ought to do it!

Nice finds, JB.

I got your package today. Love 'em! Thanks!

That Hubbard wedge was likely used to drive track - increase the space between two pieces of track so they could be pushed back into the proper radius. Track tends to get pushed to the outside of a radius. Hubbard made a lot of track tools. Some gandy dancer put his marks on it. It'll clean up fine.

dangit JB, I am jealous of your hauls. I know this might be a trade secret, but where do you find info on estate sales etc? I know Craigslist isn't the go to, that would be too easy.

I've been "in the scene" locally for a couple of years now, made several contacts, met people in the cleanout business, dig, ask questions, hunt and yes rely on CL too. After a while, once many people know what you are after, things tend to come your way. Be friendly and personable, and genuine. I've built a little network, people looking in places that I cannot get to etc. Not just luck, took some time and effort. :)

Nice! Hard to tell, but that Rockaway(?) looks fantastic.

It is a very good head, as yet unidentified. 3-3.5lb

BUT...the handle! It must come of, I like it more than the head. It is so nice and so slim, in like new condition and although tight, not the right fit. It is an amazing 24" handle. I need to get that head off of it.

I was gonna say, if it's that nice of handle (and it looks like it is) then why not keep them together? Then I saw the pictures.

Yeah. Get if off there and give it to a head it fits. Both axe and haft will be happier this way.

It's a great looking axe and a great looking haft. They just don't go together.

And I should say, if this pair had fallen into the hands of some unknowing soul that gorgeous haft might have been cut off and wasted. I shudder to think...........

Look at it! You can't buy that anywhere and at 24"? There are some here that could recreate it with time and effort, but I don't have the skill to reproduce one as nice without giving up a work day and even then maybe not that nice. I can't let that go to waste. There is a nice 1.75-2.25lb head waiting for that handle.

Awesome! The handle is what caught my eye along with the head...I thought it looked short for the head size, so I am glad to see it can be reused. Is that one of those metal step wedges with the flat metal plate in there? If so bummer...that'll be harder to remove without haft damage. Good luck!

That handle is shorter than a boy's axe, but with the eye size that must have been what it was intended for. What a great, great haft.

Edit...wait, I see some runnout. Too bad...it's completely terrible and will fail on the first swing. You might as well send it to me for disposal.

;)
