Item lost in shipping

Certainly he should've used a box or some proper re-inforcements. 'Rough handling', i.e. the packet getting thrown about or chewed on a conveyor is just a fact of transit, it can happen a lot and does. This is why larger heavier items need decent wrapping AND information of sender and recipient taped onto the knife as well, because if they part company the postal workers cannot trace the item. It's not always theft or dishonesty, the incompetence of the seller plays a role too!

As I live in Finland I have a good idea of what the situation with the Post Office (Posti / Itella) is. Generally, it is very sound indeed but poorly wrapped or packed items are not their fault or any other Post Office's clearly. One thing, padded envelopes here are absolute shite: VERY thin and flimsy indeed unlike the thick quality ones that come from USA or other EU countries. The ones here rip open just like that and cannot hold anything bulky. This is apparent to anybody who handles them, they're OK for thin items or a very lightweight slipjoint but otherwise no. The seller knows this and he opted for unsatisfactory packing, he took the risk so he must cough up. Paypal will likely sympathise with the buyer.

UPDATE:

He replied to eBay dispute with same offer of, basically, half my money. Again, claimed it was all the fault of the postal folks.
I escalated, and eBay reversed the PayPal payment in about forty minutes.
So he gets accurate feedback: good for the knife that arrived (slightly more robust re-used envelope); negative for the one that did not.

But I REALLY wanted that knife. Made by one of the few makers in Finland rated as a "Master" but now retired.

Well, all things considered, being restored to your pre-purchase position is not a bad outcome.

Although it is sort of a consolation prize due to the fact that you were willing to pay that amount for the knife that never made it into your hands, I'm very glad that you got your money back.

When will folks learn that when it comes to shipping a knife, the packaging is not the place to begin cutting corners?

Shame the seller didn't have the same respect for this knife that you do...

I ship a lot of packages worldwide, and have found out that international shipping is always a crapshoot....in addition to their handling and security procedures being iffy, quite often, there is no insurance available to some countries, or if there is, the cost makes it prohibitive, and the buyer usually rejects it based on price.

But, in this case, the seller was clearly at fault for using completely inadequate packing materials, you should file a claim with PayPal (I`m assuming that`s how you paid). Good luck !
