It's 2020 and still no Cadet X

Scissors on a sportsman, :) a rare 80s model called the Alumnus

Ahh, you're killing me! Nice.

The Alumnus had a lot of tools, such as a corkscrew, punch, etc. The Cadet X, if it had scissors, would have everything needed and nothing not needed for day to day.

It's not ideal but the Evolution 16 from Victorinox basically meets the Sportsman with scissors. It's the Wenger scissors that I'm not a fan of but it's super close. Both the cadet and evolution 16 are listed by Victorinox as 3.3 inches.

I really like having an awl too, so I think I'm going for the Evolution 14. I don't really like the Wenger scissors either, but it'll do. I have the Evolution 10, and love it. Being stuck at home, I'm really finding I need the scissors a lot. Weird.

The problem is the evolution line still had the crappy plastic scales that break. I don't know if the scales on the evolution series is as hollowed out as the regular sales, but I'm not buying anymore SAK's with plastic. If my cadet had scissors, it wold actually replace my much beloved executive. I'm actually thinking seriously of having my executive modded with some nice cocobolo or even stag scales.

Although I don't share his adventurous lifestyle, not for a minute would I argue with Jackknife's low opinion of plastic scales. However, my experience has been otherwise. Of my first SAK (Wenger) of 1972 (ish) and subsequent ones, all with celidor scales, none have broken or chipped with use, not even when dropped on concrete. That has either been due to luck or I don't know what, but not even later versions with hollowed out plastic have fractured on me. In fact, I prefer celidor scales because they can accommodate pens, toothpicks and tweezers, which the metal ones do not. But if, by chance, one of them should actually break, I would simply send it off to a Vic repair facility and keep an eye on my mailbox until it is returned. Of course, that could be a challenge if one breaks while I'm out in the boonies, but the SAK would still be usable.

Very nice Cadet Ken and you know I'm a fan of your handywork:thumbsup: hope your doing good during these crazy days:)

G'day ,

Good to hear from you .
I'm always well , but thanks for the thoughts .
Is that sheath still alive or do you want another one ?
I haven't done any leatherwork for a few years now but I was looking through my box of sheaths the other day and there are a few there sitting doing nothing .
If you think you can give one a new home then sing out .

My friend, you are very generous as you were before when gifting me the wonderful "stichless" belt sheath, which by the way is still going strong:thumbsup: I may post different knives that I carry for the day but I ALWAYS carry an ALOX Pioneer on me in the sheath you sent my way:thumbsup: I truly admire your work as it's unique in design and function and would love another iteration but only if you'd allow me to reciprocate by sending something in return;)

Just reach out when time allows: paulhilborn at hotmail dot com:)

Who can modify Cadets and add scissors?

I’d prefer a 3rd row, but losing the file would be okay instead.

Nylon scales are way better and more durable than others, mine look same as they looked the first day when knife was brand new,and are very resilient to breakage and scratching.

Despite my earlier post in this regard, I will support this opinion of nylon scales. I own 3 samples of SAKs with nylon scales, OH Trekker and 2 Sportsman, I can attest to their resistance to scuffing or other cosmetic wear. The only problem I have with them is that the Vic trademark gets worn away with use, while the cellidor versions get uglied while the trademark stays pristine.
But I don't care. SAKs are tools. So long as they hold up, the cosmetics are of no concern.

I gotta have the third row. For me, the file is too good a small driver for those little Phillips screws that electronics have. I file a small flat at the tip of the file so it fist down in the Phillips screws better.

Not intended to be argumentative but informative, so please bear with me while an old guy gives his opinion...
Since discovering the Sportsman's goodness a few years ago I've only carried my Cadet a few times. It still makes a superb gentleman's carry when all dressed up but I'm retired now so dressy occasions are becoming fewer and farther between.
The Sportsman is the exact same tool package as the Cadet but with tweezers, toothpick, awl and a corkscrew thrown in. Those tools I'm finding more valuable with each passing year. The extra size is reassuring that it's still in my pocket and is more comfortable in my seasoned hands than thinner models.
My dog used to get ticks and thorns and was always happiest when I carried a Victorinox with tweezers. I still get relief from slivers occasionally using those same tweezers. The older I get the more the toothpick comes in handy. I've poked a lot of holes with the Sportsman's awl. Pulled drain covers out, wires thru small openings and knots apart with the corkscrew all within the last year.
I think a Cadet X would be cool because I like alox but the Sportsman is obtainable for less than $20, available with super durable nylon covers and satisfies all my 3.3 inch Victorinox needs so I'm not holding my breath waiting for another knife. :) YMMV

Just pretend that long toothy thing is a pair of scissors and the small blade is a nail fileo_O I could probably get behind a Cadet X because I do like the 84mm knives. My only quirk would be wanting the smaller blade instead of the nail file. I think that’s the only reason I have yet to buy a Cadet.

I’m surprised that we’re getting a Farmer-X before a Cadet-X, but I will still pre-order a Farmer-X as soon as it is available.
