I know we all like khuks, but it'a time to re-ask this question for newbies and the curious (and also, people's tastes change). So what are you into lately besides khuks?

Primarily, I like 4-7" camping knives. Lately, I'm into Ranger knives (RAK and RD7), but I also like Ontario (Tak-1, RTAK). I've got the RAK and the Tak-1, working on the others.

I'd also like to have the old and "new" classics covered: a Mora Clipper or two, a Buck 119, a Fallkniven S1 (pending), a Cold Steel mini-Bushman and Tru-Flight, and a Becker BK7.

As far as folders for everyday carry, I'm partial to the low-end Byrd Spydercos and Boker Magnum slipjoints, of all things (especially the SUBCOM). I also try to cover the basics here, with a Benchmade mini-pika and CRKT Rollock.

What's in your wallet, er, collection?

Maybe I'm an oddball here, or perhaps it is a reflection of my 'newbie' status, but I have no strong feelings about any type of knife or blade other than khukuris. Over the years I have collected a number of small folding knives (SAK, Kabar, Buck, Gerber, etc.). Most of these were either gifts or impulse buys. For some reason, only khukuris hold the magic for me. (Of course, I am open to influence - those Himalayan Swords are starting to look really nice.)

Some people collect many other knives. I don't. I have several knives, but it is the khukuri which caught my attention as the number one wilderness choice, and I can't see any reason to wander off.

I'm tool or use orientated, I guess. Then there was the magic in the place and the good works of HI, and it became a good place to be.

While I do like my HI khurks for chopping, only my small Sgt. Khadka sees any cutting. I have a TAK-1 fixed blade and plenty of Spyderco and Benchmade folders to fill the EDC duties.

i don't buy production knives anymore, i have some and that's enough,

i prefer blades related to a people, what some call "ethnic blades", or to people (forged custom blades) kuks are my favorite for their "soul" and overall shape; HI blades / quality and this place is what first got me into kuks,

i also have a few bolos, a sansibar from the Leyte island, etc ... all usable blades; besides the pure usage factor, all these blades got me interested in the people and country where they come from,

i also like forged old style knives, i have a few japanese forged kitchen knives,

I don't really have that many knives. Other than my 18" Ang Khola, I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter, a Gerber EZ-Out folder, and a balisong I bought like 15-20 years ago.

I would love to get a heavy Bowie - either a Busse Battle Mistress or a Swamp Rat Battle Rat, but it's nearly impossible to get either, at least not from the manufacturers.

Ranger makes a big heavy knife like a Busse and Mineral Mountain Hatchet works makes quite a few heavy Bowies that are really nice and not too expen$ive:thumbup:

My favorite blades are medium sized camp knives and small hunters. Forged is my preference :). When paired with a Gransfors hatchet a small hunter is hard to beat.

You guys do this just to test me, don't you?

Okay...enough HI content to stay here for now. Once it tips the other way...off to the Cantina.

if thats the double bit hatchet from ragweed forge, i have one of the 5160 versions. nice little work horse, though i wish the handle was a little thicker.

heres what jasco metal etch showed me :D

other then that, the only blades i'm interested in or carry are busse's (and leatherman). i buy them cause i dont know of any stronger - and i buy HI because no one makes em that big :D (among many other reasons)

Yeah that's from ragnar also one of the 5160's. The first one I got was inadequately tempered and the edge totally flattened out. He either re did it or sent me a new one and it has a super durable edge.

On one hand the thin handle is not as grippy as the Reeves beside it.

On the other hand, because the reeves handle is actually wider than the head, you have a tendency to skuff it up if you are cutting in a deep notch. That's not a problem with Ragnars.

I'd like to see like a 10" OAL on one with a handle that narrow at top but radically wider at the rear for max grippage

AWESOME ETCH by the way!!!

the depth of feild on the canon 65mm is all wacky and short... i need to to a better etch on some of my khukuries. that one just came out on its own, i think i iether need a different technique or something stronger for my HI's. i could see the sweet spot on my 18" ak, but i want it to jump out at you...

Himalaynites et al, don't get me wrong; my heart belongs to khukris. :o Something about the fact that my WWII villager was, er, dare I say "caressed" by other human hands makes it all the more precious to me (try saying that about a significant other!).

It's good to have a selection of the basic favorites from all "genres," but khukris are where I hang my hat.

Received a antler-handled JKM the other day (see Steve Poll's thread for an almost identical example), and holding it up to my Tak-1 made me realize that there's really no comparison. The Tak had no soul, no essence. The JKM made me feel like I was holding the key to family.

Still like the Tak, though. The JKM is family, the Tak's a good buddy.

we seem to have very similar tastes... but we knew that.

i used to have two master hunter seconds - solid - i think i left one in my old car when i traded it in - $25 loss to me ;) have some cold steek khukris, and magically got related ones later.

folders... spyderco, benchmade, microtech, all that good stuff, gerbers, and many others. so many knives, so little time.

then the big stuff from blackjack and such from the old knifecenter and ag russel catalogs - ah knife porn. various large blades started coming in from buck, the military ontarios, and so on. found my first becker machaxe (khukri), now have most of their line and the reinhardt as well... you know how it is. found atlanta cutlery, got some of their stuff, as well as various khukris - you all have seen one - rehandled :)

oh, then what? started going customs, and that includes folders. got some BIG stuff from eight dollar mountain forges, and some franklin HAWGS, and ... i count the HI's as customs. got me some Sarges too. got a really strange kerambit trade a while ago - good stuff.

more lately back to the ethnic stuff again... puukos and leukos, HI khurkis (oh so many), and then back to production stuff - becker neckers, and ontario TAK/RTAK and ...

now of course, it's axes and such - never had a truly GOOD axe. now i have a few. want more, of course. big useful blades, tools, etc.

have sold or traded a lot of stuff too - seems i have an eye for things that become cultish years later, including the flashlights - that has fueled much in the way of current things without dinging my bank too much. it's way to easy to collect things - my winter passion was slide rules, have dozens, should sell those off too - keep a couple - the books are actually the real prizes there. same for abacuseses :)

Here's a few of what I have...probably about 1/2 I think.
These shots are from a little knife lunch I had with a friend.

The trend is small custom fixed blades.

I love H.I. Khukri's tho...a knife that has been made for centuries, by the same families, by the virtually the same methods...you just don't find that everywhere.

I have a knife from H&B forge that they call their throwing knife. This thing takes a razor edge, it's rugged, and at present it's my main knife.
I also have a Spanish Navarro folder that is a great piece.
I have a really cool looking Arabian knife that I bought from the Desert Store back when they still sold knives. It's hard steel to get sharp, but it looks really nice.
Of course, I have my HI Chitlangi kuk, I'm mentioning that to keep it real.
