I decide that I was not going to enjoy the Cabela's logo on the Alaskan Guide 110 and I wanted it gone. My first thought was to send it off to Leroy and have him make it like Mikey's(Mike K) then I thought, no I like the dark blade, why not see what will take it off. I can always send it later if I mess it up...others may want to know;). I had a can of paint stripper and tested it on a small part of the blade, nothing happened to the coating. I put it on the logo let it sit about 5 minutes, the directions said 20-30, and started to rub gently with a stiff bristle brush. About three minutes later it was gone:D.

There was a little after image on the blade but Flitz gently rubbed on took care of that, I like it...

Now if I could figure out something for the logo on the sheath:rolleyes:. If anyone out there has ideas and experience with leather, let me know. Preston

 ...Looks pretty darn good to me Preston. I really like a "kine" clean blade. If it had a nice small Cabella stamp or something it would be fine as long as it wasn't on the "meat" of the blade. I prefer Mike's and your's way over the "stock" Cabella model. That BOS logo just has to stay tho...LOL... :D

Nice work. Really looks better without teh logo.

Good thing I've got some paint stripper in the garage!

Sheath doesn't bother me.

Now where did I put that paint stripper?

Is it a pressed logo on the sheath??? Or actually carved???

Now, this is just a rumor...from an old wife...(which makes it an Old Wives Tale)...but I've heard that a wet rag placed over the pressed logo and then hit with an iron [clothes pressing iron] will lift the impression out...

Don't shoot me if it doesn't work...I've never tried it...but I do recall it from years ago...

On second thought, disregard this post altogether...

Looks like a lot of us are gonna be stripping by tomorrow....

Wish I could get mine looking like Mikes, But I don't have Trax talent at taking apart and putting back together.

Thanks, Trax, I'll try that tomorrow. I have nothing to lose. Even if it only takes out some of the impression, I'll go back in with some leather tools and see if I can hide the logo, or cobble it up enough that I'll just pitch it. Preston

I just looked at a few of my Alaskan 110 sheaths through a jewlers loop. It is a pressed logo, but on some of them, it is pressed so deep it has cut into the surface. If I am saying that right. Can see raw leather deep in some groves that looks like a cut. A couple of them arent stamped that deep. I don'tknow how you could tool that out.

IIRC, there is a big difference between pressed and stamped. Real leatherworkers tools actually cut and form as they compress the leather. Production volume manufacturing just uses a big steel stamp, and a quick blow to impress the logo into the leather. Wearing it for years, rain & moisture will quite often allow the leather to reform into its natural shape.

Quality leatherworking tools cut & deform the leather permanently.

I'm not a leatherworker; take any of this with a grain of salt. I'm trying to recall a leatherworking class from 30+ years ago..."A mind is a terrible thing to waste"...and mine is wasted... :D ;)

BTW: This is a tip from a fellow airman...if you want quality leatherwork, look up the Amish harnessmaker in your area (there will be one!)

You guys are something else...you'd dangle a Snickers bar in front of Mama Cass, wouldn't you??? :grumpy:

Now I'm going to have to take a hard look at this months' VISA statement, and see if I can't squeeze a Cabelas' Alaskan 110 into it... :(

One other suggestion... the TiN coatng has a high RC rating and you can easily use a razor blade and scape it off without scratching the coating.

Did this about a year ago and it worked fine.

Yeah, I'll say so.

I tried the Trax method(suggestion)...nothing, nada, zilch, zip:grumpy:.

I used hot tap water, soaked for a few minutes, ironed with the iron on the highest setting using a wash cloth for a barrier. No change at all!!! I'm disappointed, but very impressed with the leather treatment on this sheath:eek:.

Is there such a thing as leather inlay...maybe something to go over the logo?

Any other suggestions/ideas/comments. Preston

..."Some days you eat the bear...some days the bear eats you"...

That's three things I was wrong on today...three strikes; I'm out!!! :D
