   :D

Grab a chair and cozy up to your computer. The Carothers Field Knife Destruction Test is ready for your viewing pleasure. Hope you all enjoy.

I have disabled comments in the video itself, but any discussion here is more than welcome. Hopefully there will be lots of it.

"Meh.... that'll buff right out"

Awesome stuff!! Amazing testimony to the all around toughness of the FK!

I've only got so far as the post sharpening position about half way in on my lunch break.

It looks like you bent the bevel so I agree with you there. It was visible when you showed the edge before sharpening.

Thanks for taking the time to do this and I'll get more feedback done once I finish it.

Very thorough test. Good stuff. I'm very impressed at both the knife and the variety of tests you included. Thank you!

I have something to watch whilst my machines hum away at work tomorrow. Thanks for this. I can't wait to see what the progression looks like

Enjoyed the video ( quite long ) , did like the look of the modified spearpoint , also would have liked to have seen how the scales hold up while attached to the knife maybe smacking them while battoning .
Now totally off subject looking at your avitar I was waiting for a milkshake ....
I cringed the 2nd time on the square washer !!!

Thank you for your time and all the work you put into creating this destruction test. I always enjoy seeing the extreme limits of blade. Now we'd like to see the extreme limits of that square washer JK!

That washer was a surprise for sure!

that was pretty cool. I have a feeling that the catastrophic breakage had a lot to do with your introducing stress risers, as you mentioned. Be neat to see a virgin blade put to the bend test

And, thanks!

Very thorough. Couple of interesting things for me.
1) Looks like the FK cut into the Wilton vice a bit, surprising.
2) The spine held up well to the sledge baton.
3) I was waiting for a car hood stab test as well, maybe before and after applying nu-finsh, so slightly disappointed.

Impressive performance under tough conditions, even for the tester, who sounded somewhat winded after some of the sledging/batoning tests with the FK pushing back.

Wow, what an amazingly in depth review. Thank you for taking all the time to do such an outstanding job on the test and video.

My wife was telling me I sounded out of breath a lot too. I am no spring chicken, but you have to understand that I was not simply lifting the sledge hammer, but lifting it and then driving it downward with a lot of force (while basically hoping my hand would not "jump" into the sledge's path ;) ).

I am going to let this thread run for a few days and then make a post about some observations/conclusions I've made as a result of doing this test. Suffice it to say though that if I could have made the video 15 minutes long rather than 2 hours 15 minutes long, I would have been happy to do so. The knife, however, was having none of it. There were times I was swearing under my breath thinking, "WTF is wrong with this knife? Why won't it break?" Sure, I could have taken a jackhammer to it, but that would have moved this from the extreme to the beyond ridiculous realm.

I did think about trying to stab it into a car hood, but frankly was unable to obtain access to one. Hence the steel flat which, IMO, probably was more difficult to get through than any hood ever would be.

My pleasure, sir. Thank you for making such a fine product. Seeing what the knife can sustain in the video was impressive, but actually being there "mano a mano" with the knife, feeling the forceful hits and hearing the loud results--color me VERY impressed.

My wife poked her head around the corner and asked if I was ok with all the groans and expletives.

No. No I am not. I felt physical pain during the tip testing. I gotta take a break from watching this!

Thanks for posting the video. My FK was looking at me like "please don't do that to me" the whole time I watched this. I can't believe the abuse that knife took. Makes me feel good heading out on my elk hunt with this on my side.

Nice job!

One general question: I know that the ABS test looks for a 90-deg. bend before failure, if I'm not mistaken.

How relevant is that to the breakage here which seems to occur at 30ish degrees of bend? Is this a consequence of pursuing greater edge stability through tweaking the heat treat? Ie. greater resistance to deformation at the edge at the expense of overall ductility?

Genuinely curious!! Trying to learn about these things as I have an interest in knifemaking myself, so this is all fascinating.

Thanks!

I think Nathan is probably best qualified to answer this question. :)
