  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

It's KniVes, not KniFes!

" Just sayin" means he wants to mention something but he's too wimpy to argue !

The southerners seem to have lots of sayings than the north .
"That dog don't hunt " [ Not a believable story ]
" I'm your huckleberry " [ I'm just the man you need ]

I don't mind slang or abbreviations, as long as they are intentional.

A wall of text with no caps or punctuation is the worst... I will not read that crap anymore. We have likable/contributing members on this site that continue to do this and it pains me to pass over their posts. The way I see it, if you can't make an effort to communicate legibly, you are showing a lack of respect to the reader. I am not a punctuation snob and make many mistakes, myself, BUT the effort is there ... ellipsis and all.

It is not just the uneducated either. I have a co worker with two degrees who was an English teacher for 15 years. I was commenting on this thread and mentioned that I do not always use the proper structure for ellipses when typing fast. She looked at me confused, and I replied, "phrase, space, period, period, period. space, phrase/word". She said she never knew what that was called and never used spaces before and after the dots.

As does anyone who types a lot, I make typos and mistakes in grammar and spelling. The difference is that I ( and the others on this thread) usually re-read the wording and check for these errors. Some still slip through, but at least I checked. I truly believe that the vast majority of online and social media posts have never been re-read for content and grammar/spelling. The finger flying folks who are typing on phones apparently not concerned with the extra step to create a capital letter or a punctuation mark.

One other beef is makers ( usually young) who email me a question and I give them a link to a site with the answer or refer them to a tutorial in The Stickys. They reply that it is too hard to read all that on the small phone screen, and could I just condense it for them and tell them what to do.

I use ellipses the wrong way, all the time(dramatic pause and whatnot)... that's how I roll. I did notice that many auto-correct and voice recognition features do not put a space in front of them... so I'm not totally wrong... or at least I'm in good company(Apple)

I have a friend who worked 10yrs for a coffee company in sales and marketing. He still says eXpresso to this day. I asked him once to spell it and he did... correctly! The same guy says "irregardless", "supposably" and "acrossed".

I catch myself saying "hold on one seconT." and pronouncing "our" as "are".

What do you guys think of "AKS" as in, "Can I aks you a question?" I guess it's legit in its origin. I can't stand it.

I can't spell worth a crap! I was a ADHD kid Long Long before it was fashionable. I still never spell Knifes with an F;)

If you read ANY Knife or Gun rag, blog etc it will be filled with mispellins and horrid putuation!:)..

It just seems to be that way.

I think it has to do with the 3d creativeness of knife makers in general. Folks like us didn't give a hoot about that spelling etc..

I like working with my hands. Also as I have aged, I have outgrown some of the spillen issues and can sound out words that were impossible for me in my youth.

To the OP, Rick! Don't let it get under your skin because it will only get worse. There are young adults now that rarely even put a pen to paper. Its all
R U Go to Blah Blah Text speak.

I tend to overlook the flaws in spellin cuz I've become fluid in too languages .... Anglish and Bad Anglish ...Butt fer the life of me I kain't find the date they added that "R" to WARSH ... little help plez?

... same with overusing the ellipsis ... which I may be guilty of ... from time to time.

Guilty as charged. My verbal communication is rife with awkward pauses... it would seem disingenuous for my written phrasing to appear otherwise.

Improper grammar and punctuation was a crime deserving corporal punishment in Parochial school. I felt like a Piñata. Who remembers diagraming sentences?

My kids will NOT be taught handwriting in school. All of their projects MUST be done in MS Word(with the grammar/spellcheck activated). They are required to have an iPad(not provided by the school ... not any other brand of tablet). Their assignments are handed in electronically(via email or drop-box) and ALL school notifications are sent home via email or posted on the school website. Basically, you cannot attend school if you do not subscribe to the latest technologies... A PC or laptop just ain't gonna cut it, anymore. We sat through a parent's information meeting that had zero interaction between the parent and teacher. We sat in a gymnasium and watch a half-hour video. My daughter says that most of her lessons are taught via overhead video projector, while the teacher sits at their desk or walks out of the room, completely. Something must be done. This is ridiculous.

We have a friend with a home-schooled Down Syndrome child. She was in grade 7 with a grade 6 reading level(which is awesome). Her "new" school opted to issue her an iPad with voice recognition(I guess "special needs" are addressed with baby-sitter technology). They told the parents it was only for educational programs and the whole class got them. NOPE! For 3 months the little girl had everything read and written for her by this marvel of technology. The teacher was also told that if the girl was having a "bad day" that she could just sit quietly and play games. Well, let's just say she ended up having a lot of bad days. When her parents finally caught it, she had regressed so much that she wasn't even at a grade 4 level in reading. There was a big stink raised with the school board and the final verdict was that there is a standard curriculum for Down Syndrome children(that is not academically based) and the school is not prepared to deviate from that. The happy ending is that the parents continued to home-school her and she will be entering grade 9 next year with a full grade 8 curriculum in her back pocket.

I am utterly terrified to comment here, in fear of fatally offending Butchie Harner, who I am friends with, and speak to on occasion. In ten years, I've never once managed to figure out just what the hell he was trying to say in a forum post. Never before have I witnessed such sustained mutilation of language.

 You pipple riley knead to gif sum of the nu guyz a brake. Tey our just cumming here for add vise on how to make knifes not a grammer or sin tax lessen.;)

English is a living, breathing language... you old fogies just need to get with the times! Heck, some of you are old enough to remember when "ain't" wasn't a word, and you would get your knuckles rapped for saying it in class.

Poor communication skills annoy me as well, but I'm not sure what can be done about it. (I'm fairly certain that very sentence isn't correct :o  )

matt i have been putting up with my bad speling for over 25 years. i also find its all i can do to get the words in order when im spitting them out into the comuter so puncuation is fews and far between
