Hey, gang. First post here. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to knives, so maybe you guys can help me out, b/c I literally have no idea what's just happened....

A couple of guys at my church are really into knives. One of them has shown me a couple of his EDCs, a Paramilitary 2 and some fancy skeletonized Benchmade w/ carbon fiber grips. The other is a hardcore collector. I think a few of his knives cost as much as my car. Seriously. Under the influence, I've been toying with the idea of getting an EDC for months b/c I normally carry a multi-tool, and that sucker is heavy. In the winter it's a little better, but the weather is warming up, and when the lighter shorts come out of closet storage, an 8 oz. Leatherman is no bueno.

So, on Monday, I started exercising my google-fu in search of a reasonably priced EDC. I thought to myself, "ya, $25 should do."

NOPE! Long story short, I end up completely hacking work the rest of that day just reading about knife stuff on the internet for like 5 hours, and then BANG! I end up spending $130 for a Doug Ritter Mini RSK MK1 M390, and I'm already looking around for a custom set of scales. Maybe I should slow my roll on the new scales, though, and just use the knife as is for a while to bond w/ it first. But I'm a gear head, and no matter the hobby or interest I get into, from guns to golf, I end up customizing everything. I don't see knives being any different.

Worst part is, I thought after making a purchase for an EDC b/c I "needed" one, I'd be done with it all. But here I am, a newly minted Bladeforums member, authoring my first post b/c I can't seem to stop looking at pictures of sharp and shiny, little metal thingies on the internet. What's come over me?!?!

Doomed,

-Mike

If you are a gear-buying addict, you just found a new addiction.

#1 - you picked an excellent knife. That can easily be your one and only pocket knife, with no reservations.

#2 - Just stop now before you end up spending a lot of money on a lot of stuff that you want but don't really need.

You seem to want to be talked out of getting into knives, so I am giving it a shot. I know from experience you will not listen, but there it was. Good luck with overcoming your compulsive buying disorder.

Welcome bud. Enjoy the insanity that we all have!

Ps that is a pretty damn good dive for a first aquisition. im sure you will enjoy it!

most cheap knives are just not worth it. 130$ range is clouded with good and bad knives but the sweet spot is around $200 give or take (always some bad apples tho).

Yup, you're in for it now Mike. Welcome to the asylum!

You did super well with your first purchase as the Ritters have been discontinued along with a bunch of other nice Benchmades. It wouldn't be a bad idea to hold off on the scales for a bit while you get used to the knife and look around to see what's available. I've got 5 Griptilians--two minis and 3 fulls--and all have custom scales. As much as I love my grips, I hate those crappy Noryl stock scales, but I was surprised to find the factory scales on the mini felt better in hand than those on the full--somewhat more solid and don't present such a hot spot at the butt. Here's my crew of Grips--

There are many very good knives under $100, and some that are not good at many times the price. You made a great choice for a first knife. I personally find that particular knife too small for me to get a 4 finger grip on, but others love it. The knife itself I find excellent other than the small grip.

You should also check out Spyderco knives. These are very good and you can get some exotic steel choices for reasonable prices.

It won't be long before you pop your $200 cherry !

Sent via telegraph with the same fingers I use to sip whiskey.

Para 2 or military from spyderco is a must IMO. The sales forum here is a great bang for your buck. Learning how to sharpen your knives is really where I found the satisfaction. That enables me to do whatever I want with my knife, knowing I can sharpen it up whenever.

Doomed is right brother... your story sounds a lot like mine, about 7 years back. I won't tell you how many knives I've bought, sold, gifted, etc... but man, it's become a full time obsession. If I thought it might save you, I'd tell you to run and don't look back. But as many of us have noticed and immediately understood, you've been bit hard. The good thing is that your research paid off; you selected well.

The only thing left to do is buckle up and enjoy the ride... and welcome to BF... lots of good fellas here (and good women too), and the knowledge and humor a great many bring is just a treasure to knife nuts.

So, buy 'em, use 'em, and post pics! Welcome again

It is madness.

I think I can control it though. I only have 4 folders, not counting the SAK I've EDC'ed for years since I got interested in folding knives late last year.

Should we start a support group? :D

Clearly you have contracted the disease. I wouldn't consider it acute until you get a knife in the mail that you'd forgotten buying. In the early stages of the sickness you may read that and think "that could never happen". LOL, just wait.

Welcome and great first EDC knife, well done!

Now you "need" to have a look at som Spyderco's and CRK's.

Delica/Endura and a Sebenza 21 is mandatory.

:D:D:D

Be careful with mods. If you put $70 scales on a $130 knife, you have to wonder if maybe you shouldn't have just spent $200 on something "better." Or maybe you can find a knife that's even better still (like a Spyderco Slysz Bowie) here in the classifieds. Used knives are great value and BFC nerds take great care of their stuff.

If you like the Benchmade Ritter and have money burning a hole in your wallet, maybe look into a sharpening system. The Spyderco Sharpmaker is very popular. Keeping your knife razor-sharp is more useful than fancy pants scales IMNSHO
