I quite like the 2018 Bladeforums knife!! It was a good job of democratic choosing, and it's nice to get an advanced steel (CPM-154) in a traditional pattern, 'though I love my Carbons!! Most of the elk stag is quite "white" in the background, behind the gnarly bark. Empire Knife Company, long gone, used to extoll its "blackened" Stag handles! I wondered about darkening my BF knife!!??
As most of you know, a majority of Buck knives have black handles, and I thought I'd experiment with this knife and see how dark PPM (Potassium Permanganate) could make it!!??
Here is an example of Elk "in the White", and then, "in the Black!!;)
I applied PPM twice - maybe I will eventually do it again! But for now, I kind of like it!! It's in my pocket as we speak, ready to cut out my beloved crossword puzzles!!:DBlack Stag to Be 1.jpg Black Stag to Be 2.jpg Black Stag to Be 3.jpg Black Stag to Be 4.jpg

Charlie, in my experience with PPM, your covers will gradually fade and lighten over time. Yours was a dramatic transformation!
Thanks for your info, Jeff! Did you apply it to Bone or Stag??
I used two heavy coats, and rubbed the heck out of the handles with microfiber cloth when dried. Seems pretty firm with no rub-off now. I'll report back sometime!!
Seems PPM "burns" (oxidizes) the surface, and does not dye the surface!!
It keeps on darkening until it's dry!!

I have done it on two different stag knives, to try and get mismatched covers more similar in color. I applied it sparingly with a Q-tip, since I was looking for a specific color.

Ah!! I slathered it on there like a fool and his money!!:D
I was trying for as dark as possible! We can only wait and see if it endures I guess! I will carry and use it as often as possible!

Arno has always made nice knives! He came to the Oregon Show many years ago! All the way from S.Africa!! Good man also!!

Charlie, thanks for sharing your treated Forum Knife with us. I liked that model enough to pick up two of them and have been considering applying the same PPM treatment to one of mine. Your excellent results have me leaning much closer to giving it a try and also wondering what texture a light sanding would bring out on that darkened elk. I'll be watching for any changes to yours.:)

I feel like a Katzenjammer kid waiting to do the same! I wish I can achieve the same result as you! I dig my knife, but she would be so much more exclusive with that treatment.
Now I have to find a pharmacist kind enough to supply me with this stuff. :(
