What are some good horror movies? I don't like the bloody slasher flicks like Saw or the vomit contests like Human Centipede (never seen them or their sequels but get the gist), but the movies that make your flesh crawl and your blood run cold. Movies like the Excorcist. Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days but I like Land of the Dead. A good recent horror movie is Jeepers Creepers. There are lots of other horror movies out there. Campy like Evil Dead is fine (I know, I know, lots of gore, but just gore doesn't a good horror movie make...).

The Shining is still one of my favorites. I really like the Blair Witch Project as well.

One I really like is called Let The Right One In. It's a Swedish movie about a kid who befriends a child vampire. Not super scary, but still a good movie. They did a US remake of it, which I haven't seen, but I'd go with the original.

Silent House was really atmospheric and tense without showing too much. Recommended.

Don't Look Now is a classic.

Edited to add: Haunting of Julia. Saw this as a kid and recently watched it again on Netflix streaming. So good. Mia Farrow stars. Holds up really well. Check this out!

This is my area of expertise (LOL). I love watching horror movies, especially with my son. I'd stay up really late at night as a kid watching movies like the Mummy or Dracula.

Here are some of my all time favorites-

The Thing (John Carpenter's remake)
Dawn of the Dead (1978+2004)
Return of the Living Dead
Re-Animator
28 Days Later
An American Werewolf in London
They Live
Psycho

Black Sheep (New Zealand movie, not the American one)

Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon

Both of those are funny horror flicks. When I was a kid the original The Fog freaked me out. John Carpenter did the original and the remake and I still think the original is better.

I'll add more as I think of them

Troll Hunter. Not really overt horror, but definitely a fun October film. It's on Netflix' streaming service.

Trrrooooollllll!!

Two recent horror movies that I enjoyed were Don't be Afraid of the Dark and Insidious. Both had some creepy atmospheric parts that I was really digging.

Carrie (Sissy Spacek) - I slept very little for almost a week after I saw this in the theater.

then of course theres all the old godzilla monster movies. not horror but still appropriate for halloween. although iirc the original black and white godzilla from the 50s is a little more serious than the later ones.

I think that the scariest movie I ever saw was Cujo, the first time I saw it. I think that what made it so gripping was that it was not an impossible scenario. Knowing how it ends takes the edge off subsequent viewings.

Two movies in my October/ Halloween rotation are Dracula (1931) w/ Bela Lugosi and my all time favorite, Frankenstein (1935) w/ Boris Karloff. <insert Frankenstein smiley here> :)

Aw man, herzog's Nosferatu and the original (by murnau) are so amazing. My favorite vampire films.

Recently watched polanski's Fearless Vampire Killers. A farce, pretty funny, great soundtrack by komeda. Stars Polanski and Sharon Tate. Impossible not to reflect on the Manson murders while watching this.

In the vampire vein (duh): vampire's kiss is a romp. Starring a young and ebullient nic cage. Love it!

The thing (the remake)
ZombieLand
Dawn of the dead (2004 remake)
Cabin in the woods
All of the Resident evil movies (extinction is the best imho)
Amityville Horror (2005)
Halloween series (love them from the first to the last)
Freddy VS Jason
Underworld awakening
Case 39
Shark night
Priest

I like all of them, Hope that keeps you occupied for a while.
