It's Official Cold Steel knocked off Brian Tighes design

Well I cant even say I'm boycotting Cold Steel as they have some knives that I'm interested in like the FGX knives and I'd like to pick up a couple of thier machete's and a spear and a shambok and a tomahawk and....... Cold Steel does offer products that no one else would think to offer but something like this to take a known custom knifemakers design and copy it exactly and then to price it at the same price as the custom is wrong. Hopefully word will get to Lynn Thompson (not from the twirp I talked to) from someone higher in the knife buisness food chain (Sal you listening ;) ) and Mr Tighe will get something out of this other than "these things happen". Think of how much this discourages knifemakers like Mr. Tighe or Kit Carson who comes up with awesome designs and has tried to work with production companies like CRKT to make affordable versions of thier knives only to have someone rip off a design and then claim it as an in-house design and basically tell them the cant do jack about it. Look I'm not anti Cold Steel I probably own more CS knives than any other brand but I dont like it when someone takes something that dont belong to them and slaps thier name on it for a profit. I dont like what Gerber's doing to Kit and I dont like what's happening to Brian but on the plus side Mr. Tighe might get some good exposure from this thread and might sale more knives cause I know I'm saving up for the real-deal and I'm sure that people that like the design will cough up the 50bux extra and get the real-deal too.

and Cold Steel never gave him credit. No royalties, just a fist up the a**.

He can be a little bitter, and IMHO is entitled.

Here is what Cold Steel has done that is not disputed:

Made the first production Damascus knife worth a S**t, the Imperial Tanto, and later, the Imperial Tai Pan.

Produced,(with spottiness) a Katana-Like object worth competing with, the Imperial Katana. It is through hardened (spring tempered), and does not bend (yet) regardless of the abuse thrown at it.

Lynn Thompson is an unabashed thief, but every once in a while, he gets inspired to produce something worthwhile, that has not been done before.

Let the educated consumer beware, and choose who he buys from carefully.

I gave up on Cold Steel years ago. Lynn Thompson is so full of crap that it makes me sick. This is just another example of a company with no ethics, and I will never support that kind of company.

Also, I can not understand the reasoning being put forward by those that excuse Cold Steel by saying that other companies have done this. Yes they have, and they were wrong too. The fact that other companies have done this makes it no less reprehensible.

I think it is human nature to do this. Reprehensible as it may be it occurs nearly everyday. Lets say something is patented at the US Patent office. Or better yet, lets just say something is submitted for a patent to the US Patent office.

Say a diamond sharpener, sterilizable for the dental business so hygienists and dentists can sterilize them with each pack of instruments they use on a patient. This insures that each patient gets not only a sterile pack of tools used on them but there is a sterile sharpener there just for those tools as well.

It is 4" long by 3/4" wide with an extra fine magnetic diamond pad on it welded in place and sealed so it won't come off when sterilized.

Then it is sold to a company to manufacturer it for you in bulk for a cut of the profits and next thing you know within weeks of it's debut in the dental business as the "Edgemaker Diamond Sharpener" there are three on the market.

One 4" long by 3/4" wide with a metal handle and magnetized x fine diamond pad. The original.

One that is 5" long by 1" wide with a high temp polymer handle for lighter weight also sold as 'the original' with a non magnetic sharpening pad.

And still another with a 3" long overall length and 1/2" wide with the handle and pad all one piece and a magnetic pad and cleaning cloth included.

True story. This all took place after just a submission for a patent.

Just one example of how it goes in this world of business. Reprehensible? Yes, but when I visited my attorney to see what could be done there was no case. These folks that stole the idea made just enough changes to the original design to be able to get away with it legally. That is all it takes and it is legal.

Boycott if you want it doesn't stop it or change a thing guys. There are people actually hired by big business to do one thing; watch and review new patents. Even the rejected ones get checked out and when they see something that will work and/or sell they jump on it.

Welcome to business 101.

Nicely stated.

I don't think it matters whether other companies do it, whether it is a technical violation of patent law, or whether a boycott is likely to have any effect. All I can directly control is my own behavior and I choose not to reward what I consider to be unethical business practices. This allows me to live a happier life.

Exactly MY point!

Those of us that continue to do business with slobs like LT excuse his cruddy behavior.

You can justify all you want, and the bottom line is that you excuse his deeds so that you can gratify yourself by buying from an unethical individual.(read cheap)

I guess that it is an indicator of the breakdown of ethics in our society when the attitude is " I like what he's doing, I don't care what it is he does that is against the concept of right or wrong, just give me another of his crappy knives."

Makes me wonder whether I want to trade or buy from some folks on this forum, lack of honest values and all. :(

holy sheeit that design got replicated to the "t".. CS should be called on this via telephone, email, or letter. it's just plain not right, & they should know that their connoiseur market segment knows it.

I guess that is my point Garlic. LT doesn't care and I'm sure in his mind he has done nothing wrong or illegal. I'm also sure he covered all the bases before moving on production because folks like him have this kind of thing down to a science.

I don't think it is right to condemn the whole company for one man's acts though. Many people work for CS. Many good people and there are other products that are in their line that are very good items of high quality.

My father used to say there are three sides to every story. Yours, mine and the truth. So far we've only heard two sides and most of that is opinion and hear say. I'd love to hear from both the people involved directly in this apparent dispute personally but that is just a pipe dream at this point. It will never happen.

In the mean time it is business as usual for LT and CS. I'm sure he loses a lot of sleep over it.

Has anyone talked to Tighe about this? It sounds like people are assuming that he didnt approve this and has no knowledge, but it might be worthwhile to confirm that.

   that's the first post

Sendec in my very first post I said that I emailed Brian Tighe thru his website and forwarded the link to cold steel's knife and asked if he had licensed it and he said and I quote "No Cold Steel just ripped of my blade design, I have had no contact with them." it dont get much more explict from Mr. Tighe's side.

At the risk or restarting the sh*tstorm, this is really no worse than the BenchMade 630 Skirmish, IMO.

there seems to be alot of this thing going around but at least with the other companies you still get a quality rip off while cs seems to have more qc problems than they are worth.

lets not forget putting american tomahawk company on their taiwan made hawks. as if anyone would think this is an atc hawk in the first place
