I think it is human nature to do this. Reprehensible as it may be it occurs nearly everyday. Lets say something is patented at the US Patent office. Or better yet, lets just say something is submitted for a patent to the US Patent office.
Say a diamond sharpener, sterilizable for the dental business so hygienists and dentists can sterilize them with each pack of instruments they use on a patient. This insures that each patient gets not only a sterile pack of tools used on them but there is a sterile sharpener there just for those tools as well.
It is 4" long by 3/4" wide with an extra fine magnetic diamond pad on it welded in place and sealed so it won't come off when sterilized.
Then it is sold to a company to manufacturer it for you in bulk for a cut of the profits and next thing you know within weeks of it's debut in the dental business as the "Edgemaker Diamond Sharpener" there are three on the market.
One 4" long by 3/4" wide with a metal handle and magnetized x fine diamond pad. The original.
One that is 5" long by 1" wide with a high temp polymer handle for lighter weight also sold as 'the original' with a non magnetic sharpening pad.
And still another with a 3" long overall length and 1/2" wide with the handle and pad all one piece and a magnetic pad and cleaning cloth included.
True story. This all took place after just a submission for a patent.
Just one example of how it goes in this world of business. Reprehensible? Yes, but when I visited my attorney to see what could be done there was no case. These folks that stole the idea made just enough changes to the original design to be able to get away with it legally. That is all it takes and it is legal.
Boycott if you want it doesn't stop it or change a thing guys. There are people actually hired by big business to do one thing; watch and review new patents. Even the rejected ones get checked out and when they see something that will work and/or sell they jump on it.
Welcome to business 101.
