It's really bugging me! First time backpacking.

Look at the guy's location, people. Friggin Los Angeles.

The "homies" are a very real threat. They've taken to going into the somewhat wilder areas to victimize people, do their dealings, and do their "production" of what they deal in.

Carry your gun, dude.

or look at my location, gulf coast MS, walk in the woods and you might find a meth lab guarded by mississippi homies(rednecks) with shotguns and pistols.
can you hear the banjos???

Carry your gun, dude

The closer to civilization I'd camp the more I'd worry.

Bingo.

For your first backpacking trip, head into a NP like Kings Canyon NP. If you'd feel more comfortable with a firearm, go-for-it, but it's overkill. I understand that sleeping in the middle of nowhere can be unnerving, but honestly, you're more likely to run into crazies and bears etc. at car camping spots.

Again i got no idea where you go backpacking. I go to the Sierra as my favroit spot. Never had a problem with 2 or 4 leged. But i still carry my 357. What i do need to do is get better with it.

if you look you would see my gun at the upper left side where my head should be.

At night time the only thing to worry are bears and i seen them before. But must say they would run away as soon as they see people.

I hope your firearm is just posing for a picture and not just in plain condition like that! But jeez that is hardcore with no tent or any shelter. I saw a huge tarantula last night!

Glock26 as it was said before a gun wont do you any good if you cant get to it. So yes its always close to my hand and if i turn around i switch the sides the gun is on. On that trip i didnt see anyone for days. It realy is not a hard core backpacking. Most of the time there is no point in a tent or a tarp realy. Unless it rains or you got mosquitos out in force.

OH man, let's just say I was in the San gabriel mountains, and bugs were out in force! And yes my Glock was by my side.

I carry a pistol when backpacking...it's just a habit and most the time I completely forget I have it. After tours to both Iraq and Afghanistan, it takes me a couple of months reaching for my pistol when heading out of the house:D Somebody brought up a good point about how to carry and having it accessible; good advice and find what works for you. I'm going to try a Safepacker this fall/winter. I have worn pancake syled OWB holsters with backpacks and they were comfortable even after many miles...not quickly accessible, but it will always be with you. I went back to Glocks for outdoors carry and they've become my regular CCW pieces; it's a good choice. When hiking around swampy areas, I typically go for my 5-shot .44SPL Bulldog Pug with the first couple of rounds consisting of snake-shot.

Everybody is going to have a different opinion about firearms and outdoor recreational activities. It's a personal choice and just like I respect those that don't carry, I expect them to respect those that (responsibly/legally) carry firearms. I do feel safer when outdoors and sleep much better than at home...even though the best method of self-defense is situational awareness, don't let that consume your mindset when out backpacking.
