it's so cold ..

When you step outside and the snow squeaks beneath your feet, and you take a breath and your nose freezes shut for a second.

I know this sounds strange, but it reminds me of my childhood.

I know exactly what you mean. I can't explain it, but I prefer it to be sub 10 degrees F to 25 or so. When it is that cold, everything is dry and quiet, even without show on the ground. I actually told the Frau yesterday that were I not still struggling to get over this cough, I probably would've gone hiking.

So I'm guessing I shouldn't complain too loudly that the temperature here in San Diego has dropped below 70? What is this "snow" you speak of?

At least they have a good selection of sharp tools for building snow shelters in the shop...

Yep I hear you guys. -6 when I got in my truck this morning. I know some have it worse, but I was installing a kitchen in an addition, but the addition has no heat. was running a couple little space heaters to try to warm the place up a little.

I'm going to Texas hill country this weekend. His in the mid 30's lows in the mid 20's with a change of snow turning to sleet. My wife and I are looking forward to some good hiking!

...then a massage, a couple of cocktails by the fire and great dinners at Rose Hill Manor in Stonewall, TX.

Frankly, having lived in Texas for over 20 years, I miss the cold weather. My daughter lived in Wisconsin for seven years, so we got a couple of good weeks of cold when we visited there. But she has moved back to Texas...so we'll have to get more creative in getting some good winter weather.

I feel your pain brother! I'm down here in Brunswick, expecting nice balmy weather for the winter, but noooooo... someone forgot to turn on the dang furnace!

I'm confused, did you run six miles in 8 degree weather by choice?!?!

That's right! Much rather be out than at home on the couch. Works for me... Maybe not for everyone.
Thankful for my ability to be able to run!!

That's an excellent thing to be thankful for.

8 degrees tho? I'll take the couch.

Follow up:

We hiked three days straight. Friday , high around 35, we were the only people in Buescher State Park. Saturday, high 31 with light freezing rain, we were 1 car of 6 to visit the park. We saw nobody on the trails and saw one truck in the parking lot by the waterfall (at Pedernales Falls State Park). Sunday, no rain, high 35, we saw a total of 11 other people on the trails and 5 near the picnic ground.

Folks in Texas really don't like (relatively) cold weather!

And that is EXACTLY why I love cold weather camping. 😄

The weekend was awesome. We didn't camp, we stayed in a B&B + dinner. It was fabulous.

I can't say enough good things about Under Armor infrared Cold Gear. We were often stripping out of our jackets and hiking in our base layer and a light quarter zip fleece (we added a Gore-Tex rain jacket when we had precip). I had a North Face Windwall with me, but it ended up in my day pack.

I also had a pair of Hatch cut resistant winter patrol gloves, and they proved t be one of the best gloves that I have ever worn.

It is amazing how much winter gear has improved since I was a kid!
