I've come to the conclusion

I have always hoarded knives- I'm not systematic enough to be a collector. I should get rid of more, but they don't take up as much room as grandfather clocks, so I won't.
I'm hoping someday to become the blade-giver to a post-apocalyptic tribe, preferably of amazons.

KBA,
i'm right with this also "
"Since then I have become picky, really picky. Rockgolfer, I believe, posted in the GEC thread that it is sort of fun to watch [those he would like to buy] float on by. It is freeing "
there are so many great "traditional" knives out there. i don't need nor could I use all the knives i'd like to try out or own.

yep, this would work ok too.

I'm an out of control user, but some see more use than others:D

I like to have a lot of knives around me they are objects of beauty after all as well as tools.

So a Collector of Use. However, the ones that don't see a lot of daylight will get traded or sold but being in Europe it's not that easy to sell stuff back to the US so I rely on interested Europeans to help 'structure' my collection/cache:thumbup:

So what do you guys consider yourselves?
Users or collectors?

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy. "
Which is to say, "You left out a couple of categories."

I'm interested in what features make for a useful pocket knife. I accumulate knives as I try one variation after another. I keep the knives that accumulate to use for future comparisons. And of course I have to use them in order to evaluate them.

Doubtless, some day my accumulation will be redistributed. But, I'm unlikely to perform the distribution personally.

Have to say/admit that I'm a collector.

I'll never use what I have.

BUT, now reached the point where I have followed my temporary, changing whims down so many alleys that I now clearly seen an end.

So, very soon (or so I tell myself), I'll be offering for sale the majority of those I bought for any reason other than my (now) one central passion: BEAUTIFUL ARTFORMS WHICH HAPPEN TO BE KNIVES. Don't mean the > $1,000 variety either - much art to be had in custom fixed blades and midtech folders.

Don't think I'd have gotten to that realization without buying, appreciating and reflecting upon them sitting in front of me.

Thanks for starting this thread!

Not to be a sycophant , but that's a great answer. I've heard said, "I don't collect knives, I just haven't found the perfect one yet."

I've given the answer you quoted before. This question comes up every once in a while.

I know I'll probably regret selling them later . . . Now off to agonize

Maybe you should consider not selling them, if it implicates regret and agony. If it keeps your house from getting repossessed, then sure. Little Timmy needs new braces? All for it. But otherwise, maybe keep them.

Well, I used to think this way about motorcycles, and I guess I still do. This quote makes total sense to me! I understand this mentality, to it's core. However, I actually have found the perfect knife (for me, at this very moment). And yet, I have another on order!??

For 40 years I only owned 1 knife. I then retired and knives just appeared as if by magic. First a daughter gave me one , then my brother , then another daughter started giving me knives for gifts , then my son started it too , then a grand daughter started , and then I found out how much I liked Barlows , and then the 77 Barlows came out , and then the 73s. And it goes on. I guess I was an accumulator that started a collection of things I really like . I like Barlows and then good Stag.

I don't and won't bother owning any knife I feel hesitant to bury up to the bolster in a fish belly!

I guess I'm a collector. The traditionals are so pretty I just keep them in the safe and end up carrying my SAKs most of the time.

Very interesting. A topic which is close to many of our hearts -I can tell by the number of responses to the thread.
Personally I'm like one of those old fuddy duddys you see driving a reeeallly hot car -eg a Brand new V8 Monaro or Subaru fully worked bullpitticus Ken Block signature model one of only 4 ever made .
Yet they the way they drive they might as well be in a 1972 Beetle or a Datsun 120Y or some other old rustbucket.
It doesn't matter that they're not using it in the manner for which it was made. It's theirs and that's it.
Well thats' me with pocket knives.
Here's a question just to stir the pot- I have absolutely no idea how many knives I own -does that make me a bad collector? an obsessive accumulator? or just a swish cavalier with a devil may care attitude?:D

over 100.

I'm sure it's not the first time I say this; I have found that collecting (in the oriented, focused, real meaning of the word) is a sort of genetically determined feature...which I don't have :D
Accumulator? neither. In fact, I prefer owning very few knives and using them.
But I am a very curious person, so I like to change and try the (few) knives that catch my interest. And I sure use my knives.
So I'm somewhere in between user and explorer

I am a user when it comes to a knife, any other tool, object or thing in my life.

There is nothing wrong if a person is a user or a collector or both in my opinion. It is their life and business not mine.
