I've come to the conclusion

Very interesting. A topic which is close to many of our hearts -I can tell by the number of responses to the thread.
Personally I'm like one of those old fuddy duddys you see driving a reeeallly hot car -eg a Brand new V8 Monaro or Subaru fully worked bullpitticus Ken Block signature model one of only 4 ever made .
Yet they the way they drive they might as well be in a 1972 Beetle or a Datsun 120Y or some other old rustbucket.
It doesn't matter that they're not using it in the manner for which it was made. It's theirs and that's it.
Well thats' me with pocket knives.
Here's a question just to stir the pot- I have absolutely no idea how many knives I own -does that make me a bad collector? an obsessive accumulator? or just a swish cavalier with a devil may care attitude?:D

.
Tell me what "swish" means in Australian before I answer that.

I'm sure it's not the first time I say this; I have found that collecting (in the oriented, focused, real meaning of the word) is a sort of genetically determined feature...which I don't have :D
Accumulator? neither. In fact, I prefer owning very few knives and using them.
But I am a very curious person, so I like to change and try the (few) knives that catch my interest. And I sure use my knives.
So I'm somewhere in between user and explorer

Fausto,

I understand what you mean!

I told my husband that the Grohmann #1 and Cold Steel Canadian belt knives are going to the kitchen more for BOTH of us to use. We have one G knife and one CS knife. They were his knives and he gave them to me. So they are OUR knives now and being used more than before. Those knives handle very well!

I am only into fixed blade knives due to my good and bad day hand issues now. I ACCEPT that fact of life.

A I use the Buck Ranger Skinner #113 FB knife for daily carry. I TOTALLY gave up on folding knives due to my good and bad hand days. I LOVED the BUCK 110 and 55 knives and now my husband loves them. He carries the BUCK 55 on him every day now and he put his other daily traditional knife in the drawer. I would still suggest and praise these single blade BUCK knives to any person! I would still use them if I did not have stupid hand issues too! He has two BUCK 110 knives and two BUCK 55 knives.

B I have the Buck Vanguard FB knife which is a bit bigger with a 4.25 inch blade.

C I have the Buck PakLite FB knife which is used in the kitchen and camping. It is not a traditional style knife but I am enjoying it. I wanted to try it out and he got one for me.

D I have my Estwing camp axe.

E I have two Sog Fasthawks. One is kept in the house. The other one is for camping and it is kept in a tub with some other gear in the van.

I am still looking at a larger knife for the woods/wilderness in the BUCK brand or maybe a Bark River or another brand.

I tried a filet knife that my husband wanted me to try and I did not care for it. It did not FIT my hand well. The brand name escapes me now.

I tried several other NICE knives of his but they were NOT my thing.

If I had to keep only ONE KNIFE... it would be the BUCK #113 knife. I would want to keep my Estwing camp axe and the Sog Fasthawk too.

Swish is a US English slang term for effeminate behaviour and interests[1][2]

australian slang - "swish" means "high class".

I understand your reticence

Great thread, I guess I am a bit of both, about a year ago I was going to do a top 10 knives video but discovered my top 10 rotates from month to month. So I am a collector who uses his collection I usually find by no intentional plan that ever 3 to 5 weeks there are a few knives that I am rotating through then the next three to five weeks it will be come different ones. I think I just enjoy the variety.

I started out around '73 as a Collector, with a User. After all these years of buying, selling and trading knives, I believe I have advanced to the Hoarder Stage in my life! :D

I dont really have that many opportunities to use my knives working in and office and when i do, like when going camping i tend to bring what i would consider my users like a rat 1 or an endura and leave the nicer ones at home so i guess i would consider myself a more of collector than a user. though i wish it was an even split
i can totally dig this, a Rat1 and an Endura is a great combo for camping.
i guess that is the point, if you have more than you can use you are a collector, if you have a few you are a user?
i have no idea how many knives are in this house. i asked myself this question the other day, " could i use a different knife every day of the year without using the same" maybe!

100% user here. Why spend the coin on a safe queen? The kids are gonna give'em away when I'm gone anyway, or are some of you fellas raking it in by sitting on them for a few years?

You tell me? That's what I'd like to hear.........

well done Dave -yes swish is taken to mean "a cut above" or top grade.
(voice deepens) And thats what I meant!:D

Having said that there is a shop right next door my local post office called Pretty Swish it sells the kind of dust collecting crap that appeals to females rather than males. The proprietor is a bloke but he is "good with colours" ;). SWMBO drags me in there occasionally to show me some trinketry that I have zero interest in and I have to go "mmmm yeah mmmm yeah thats nice mmmm get that one" I think many of you will know that scenario.

Gunna need a pretty big rake I reckon. One that works for a bout 100 years after I go to the other place and even then they ll probably find a way to rip me off.:D

Long version:
I started out with traditional knives not all that long ago and grabbed whatever pattern that struck me and that I could afford at the time. Since then I've accumulated a decent number of knives though I know I'll never be able to "fully" use them all if that makes sense. Of all the patterns that I have I notice that I gravitate towards just a few for regular carry and use so it's likely that I'll be letting some of the others go soon. I'd like to focus on new runs of patterns that I know I enjoy while perhaps leaving room for a custom or two.

Short version: I prefer to use my knives, but would also like to have a few "special occasion" pieces
