I've got an itch for a Cattle Knife, but what exactly is a Cattle Knife?

Dr. T's take on the cattle knife. Ivory scales. One of my favorites and carried often.

Here is a another one, a personal favorite.

Faint.

BTW, this is what would be called a Premier Cattle knife. Made only for a brief time before the introduction of the Stockman pattern. Very, very difficult to fit a spear profile into a serpentine frame. Made by very few makers and only for a very short period of time. If you ever run into a Stockman with a Spear blade hang onto it, VALUABLE! The Taber you show is a knockoff of T. Bose's Diamond Edge Cattle pattern. My $.02 for what it is worth.

"knockoff" implies a cheap, hastily done or casual imitation. I would not call the Taber a knockoff, although I'm sure you didn't mean any offense :)

Henry Sears junior cattle knife with Rogers (Rodgers?) bone and Queen shield. I don't know what the deal is with the shield, but I am fond of this little knife.

Those old fellows can be more colorful than my language. This one is an unknown, but cute at 3 3/8 inches.

The knife is correct. "Queen" was one of their trademarks. Another one of their trademarks was "1865". I have one of their catalog reprints...in a box... somewhere...

Its got ivory scales -more of a "tribute to" than a "knockoff". :)

Just signed off on one of these-

Hey, that's my photo! I hope you like yours as much as I like mine. I've had the pictured knife for about 5 weeks and it has been an excellent companion. I've carried it more than any other knife since I've gotten it. Congrats on the knife and especially the retirement. Looking forward to the day when I can do the same.

Meako
Congrats and wonderful knife well chosen!

Bad choice of words on my part. You are correct and I apologize if any offense was taken. I have looked at the good Doctors work at shows and his work is first rate and he is a fine gentleman.

Meako and Rick, I should have the Ebony Case/Bose on Monday. I'll be sure to post up some pics. I was on the fence about getting it because I wasn't sure how thick the knife was going to be. I had the Coffin Jack and while I liked it, I felt that it was chunkier than it needed to be. Didn't carry it much so it went on down the road.

I'm really looking forward to getting this one however. I need to stop getting so many single blades and diversify my collection better.

I'm loving the pictures of all of those old knives!

I totally agree with Gev; fantastic knives in this thread, as well as some very interesting information!:thumbup:
An Ulster for Craftsman. 3 5/8 inches. More of that boring Rogers Bone.

This canoe version REALLY grabbed me!! Outstanding!:cool:

Is this a cattle knife? Spear main, spey and punch secondaries.

Whether or not it's a cattle knife, anyone have any hints about the manufacturer? "USA" on the tang stamp is the only marking I have to go on.

GT, It's a cattle knife. I think it's probably made by Colonial.
...
5K Q's, post 17, i think your Cattle knife is a Kingston, a lower end Ulster line, made in Ulster or Imperial factories 1950's-60's i think. I have a small collection of Kingston's but they are at my other house. I'll check in about 2 weeks and post a pic of a Kingston Cattle to see if it jives with your "USA" knife.

Major thanks for the "leads" on the cattle knife I posted, Jake and K. Joe. Once I had some "conjectures" to chase down, my Googling was a lot more productive. I think K. Joe (and Gev in another thread) nailed it with the Kingston info; I'm incredibly impressed by your knowledge, gentlemen!!:thumbup: Here's a link I found that pictures a Kingston K-320 in 1947, and I think it certainly bears a resemblance to my knife!! http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/kingston/pages/k1947-12.htm
