Izula bite aka "A lesson on stitches"

I was cord wrapping my Izula today, in the sheath so I didn't get an Izula bite. I was tying the finish not and pop, she popped out of the sheath.

Cut my right idex finger (trigger finger!) right below the middle joint. About 1/2" wide and about to the bone. I can still bend it and feels to have full feeling, so I guess I got lucky.

I was just talking in chat the other night about how I wanted some emergency suture kits and needed to learn how to stitch. I got a first hand show today. I use a computer mouse for a living and shooting is my favority hobby. Of all the fingers to injure.

Be careful guys and gals. Complacency can hurt!

Tell you what brother, I looked at my cam and was going to snap a pic, but at the time I didn't know if I had cut tendons or what. I've got her stitched and wrapped until Monday. Without getting too graphic for those with weak stomachs, when fat from my finger is hanging out, my photo skills went down. :D

Hope you heal quick!

I cut off the tip of my finger one time (I worked as a cook for a decade or so); I understand how some fine motor skills degrade when faced with that. For me, it was the fine motor skill of standing up and walking around.
After 15 or 20 minutes, I bettered the original bandage and went back to work, but man, that first 10 minutes was a bear.

I know..sounds pretty lame, but hey, it was the first time I've ever cut the tip off my finger. I did finish my shift.

Seriously, adaman, good luck with your wound. Tape the edge next time!

Sorry to hear you got a first hand "lesson" that way Adam. I hope everything heals up OK and you are back to mouse clicking and trigger pulling ASAP. Good luck

man... i was carving with my RC6 and i cut myself, sliced my index finger...
last night i cut my thumb testing my finger on an apple :D

EDIT: meant testing my RC3 not my finger... :D :D :D

Too bad you cut yourself. Accidents happen very easily.
Cut myself cleaning my kukri earlier this week, just a small cut though.

Adam I did the same damn thing you did tying the paracord onto my Izula. When I was finishing the knot the knife popped out of the sheath and sliced the inside of my thumb clean open. I ended up having to get 2 stiches in my thumbs to close it up that night. I really tried to get some pics to post but I was home alone and couldn't stop the bleeding and hold the camera at the same time. Glad to hear that yours wasn't too bad. I learned my lesson that might just like you.

Wow!
I'm glad I'm not the only one...I sliced my left pointer-doing the exact same thing!! Cut down deep-finger fat hanging out and everthing-- but fortunately I missed the tendons. 4 stiches in the ER....then I came home and finished the wrap!!

-tryin to get pics up, but for some reason, its not letting me

Didn't read the other posts but learning how to suture is easy. It's the cleaning of the wound that's hard. Especially in the woods. Unless you are totally f'd, do not suture yourself. Throw some duct tape on it until you get to the emergency room. And that is exactly what an er doc told me.

Lol, common occurance eh?

Anyone who handles a knife enough will probably cut themself eventually, those who use a hammer will whack a finger eventually....

And a big +1 shotgun. Stitching an infected wound = bad juju.

I recommended the ken onion shuns for my dad because he wanted a good set of kitchen knives and he's a lefty. When he got them he pulled one knife out and cut his finger. He pulled another knife out and cut a finger on the other hand. He's not used to sharp knives. He told me the story and I told him my opinion. "If a knife doesn't make you bleed than it isn't yours." LOL

I did the same exact thing while pulling pressure for the finish knot on my Izula. Mine went through my thumb lengthwise from the crease in the thumb all the way to the tip. 9 stitches and a big piece of humble pie.

i feel you your pain adam i was also marked by the all mighty rat once ..

carving pumpkin + loud kiddos + sharp blade = 12 stitches

It's amazing how many of us Izula wrapping pros there are around here! It makes me feel a hell of a lot better knowing that I'm not the only one that's done that. :)
