Izula Scales

i picked up some RIT dye tonight and will try it out sometime this upcoming week.(if someone doesnt beat me to it)

Just dyed my scales with Fiebing's dye. This stuff is GREAT! I dipped them into the container and let them dry. They are BLACK! Nothing has rubbed off on my hands and very little rubbed off on a rag. I even accidentally dropped one off the scales into the dogs water while I was rubbing it down with the towel. my first reaching was anger with myself, then I thought, well, this ought to be a good test. Still, nothing rubbed off so water does not make the dye come off. I'm impressed! I'll try to get a picture up later.

How wide do the scales make the knife at the handle? Just thinking for in pocket carry, do they make it too thick to fit in pockets comfortably. Obviously without the scales it's awesome thin, but once you put the scales on, what does the total width become?

It's thin enough that I still wear mine around my neck are it's hardly detectable. I much prefer it with the scales. I didn't particularly like forfitting the hank of string so I wrapped it around the sheathe with the fire stick and the snare rings.

They add some bulk, but not much. In my opinion the added bulk is perfect and certainly not too much to make carry any less easy.

Here's a quick side by side shot of an Izula with handles and one without.

instead of starting another thread about izula scales i will post this here :D

just got mine! :D

these make the izula AMAZING!!! i had always liked the way the naked izula felt, but it is in a completely different league of feel with the scales!

run dont walk to get them!

Here's mine with some friends...a scrap yard, koyote and mora...all cut very well!

Thanks for the side by side comparison - makes my decision to get them easier.

im going to try dying the scales with rit tomorrow. ill post pics.

I did it today. Originally I was going to go for a dark purple, but it didn't work out so well. So I went black and I think it actually looks very good and didn't change the texture of the handles.

Pardon my poor pictures, but here's the end result:

(dyed on the left, stock on the right)

Next time I'll try the color removal solution that Rit suggests before dipping in the dye.

I am happy with the black though.

Nice work on that dye job! I've got a green izula, matches perfectly with the scales.
I've dubbed it "The baby HULK!" You wouldn't like it when it's angry!

did you not look up 3 posts from yours?

i have mine sitting in the color remover solution now, but it doesnt seem to be doing anything :/ oh well
next will be the orangish colored dye

EDIT: the color removing solution DOES work. it just doesnt seem like it when its wet. i will grab a picture in another 10 minutes because theres still a few darker spots

this is what the color removing stuff does to the scaled after 20 minutes

i then let the scales dry out, and started dying them. I didnt dilute the dye as much as they say, so it came out darker

they really arent that bright, but for some reason my phones camera makes them seem that way. theres still the original micarta "darkness' to it, just some of the exposed canvas is now orangeish tinted
