Not wanting to steal any more time on another person's thread, I thought it may be good to start a thread where people could be confessional and admit they, too, are a jackass.

Mark, please be indulgent about this being outside "the Grinder", as there are obviously candidates who aren't paying members and couldn't participate otherwise. Thus, I think this is actually topical for this forum. I pray you agree. Maybe even make it a sticky. :foot:

My idea is this: we get a lot of newbies who may be intimidated over our tendency to chide them for asking questions which the regulars have become jaded about from repetition.

If we go ahead and let them know about us, they may read something that should probably offend them, but instead can brush off the hurt as , "Ah, it's just one of the jackasses. They forget they asked the same questions at one time, too." They would know that we may be mean and petty and self-indulgent at times, but that despite our manner, we actually ARE willing to help. They could then go on to read the abundant knifemaking info available here and hopefully even participate. Eventually, some of them might want to be a member of the jackasses, too.

If enough people will be honest, we would have enough respondents to have a JITH, and could make little tokens symbolizing our spirit and trade them with each other. Indeed, the idea one could have one of those tokens, too, may inspire them to be a jackass. It could be an ongoing thing and maybe we could elect a Chief Jackass and a Stable. Eventually we could write magazine articles and compete with the other knifemaking organizations. Eventually have a certification program and hand out JA and MJA Stamps.

Since this is offensive, of course, I want to be the first to sign on as a jackass: "Hi, my name is Mike, and I'm definitely a jackass."

That said, I may be first to step up, but I'm pretty certain I can't be top jackass. Competition is pretty hot.

So, who's on board? ;)

Yes, I guess I can seem like a Jackass at times.

If people ask a question, receive an answer and then make you justify your answer, I won't have anything to do wiht that person after a couple of those episodes.

If a new maker, or anyboby for that matter asks questions, gets replies and never comes back to the thread, where honest hard working people have DONATED their time, and thanks those same people, then IMO they're nothing but users and don't deserve my time.
I won't answer anymore of their questions after seeing that form of abuse a couple of times. And it is abuse!!:barf:

If you give YOUR OPINION on how a problem can be fixed, and some jackass comes along saying or intimating their way is the only way, I will probably never respond to a thread by them again.
All answers here are opinions. Nothing more, nothing less.
There are a thousand ways to reach the same goal, all of them right if they work for you.

When you make veteran makers defend themselves, or their methods when they answer your questions, then you can't blame them for leaving the boards.
Less than 5%(if even that, probably more like 1% or less) of the knifemakers in the world participate on all the cutlery related boards.
Maybe the absent majority are the smart ones.

I've had veteran knifemakers tell me that they're so sick of knives they never want to hear of them again because the knife community in many areas has become so mean spirited and cult like.
Friggging grown men and women arguing over a stupid piece of steel that most can live without. How ridiculous!:barf:

I wonder if I'd even go back to making knives if my back were fixed tomorrow. It just doesn't seem worth it to be honest.

I guess that makes me a Jackass for ranting.

So far, all we're getting is the "M"'s. What's up with that, eh? LOL

Nope, I think you make good points, Mike H. The door swings both ways. I will even add that one of my peeves is people not filing out their profiles so you have to deal with a wiseacre who has big huevos only because they hide behind the door of anonymity and take potshots.

Well said, Mr. Hull. :)

SURE I'M IN, NOT LIKE NOBODY KNOWS ALLREADY IS IT

My name is David Schott and I am a total jackass.

Ive asked stupid questions, posted stupid pictures, spammed the board with pictures no one cared about, derailed threads with wiseass comments, and I am sure at times shared what I knew only later to find out what I knew wasn't even true in the first place.

But, otherwise, I'd still be thinking I could heat a piece of mild steel i got at home depot with a torch, dip it in water, and it was a knife, so for all those who contributed to my development as a jackass or even supported it, I thank you.

Anyone ever tell you that you got purdy lips, Sweany? :D Aw, you went and changed the foto. :( LOL

I think you got us a mascot, though. :)

Are you saying you cant ?

I don't know if I'm a jack-ass. I'm a smart-ass... and a dick.

I asked more than my share of dumb questions, and continue to do so.

I've been making knives as my only job for 5 years, but I still wouldn't call myself a "veteran maker" and feel funny calling new guys, "new guys" as it implicates that I must think I know what the hell I'm doing. When really, it just means I've been f-ing things up for longer than they have.

Some questions on here are ridiculously redundant, and I think the posters must not see the search function. But then again, there have been many times that I have searched for a specific thread that I KNOW FREAKING WAS HERE and I can't find it with the search...

I have never turned ANYONE away from visiting my shop, so I don't think I'm too much of an ass-head when it comes to TRYING to help-out.

I AM a jack-ass for writing out a long post in this thread... but screw you if you don't like it!!! :jerkit: :grumpy:

HeeHeeHee :p :D

This thread is a nuthouse and it's all about therapy, Nick.

Didn't ya feel better after what you said, ya dick? :D

Don't worry, though, they say it takes one to know one, and I definitely feel you're a jackass, too. Welcome. ;)

Yep, I guess its official. I'm a jackass too. Lol, I've known it all along though. That why I need Jesus so bad. I think there needs to be a SQA reguistry as well as a BSA one. SQA Being stupid question asker of which I think I would reign as overlord. and BSA, bad speller assembly. But I've asked dumb questions and given info that wasnt completly true and fortunalty I was corrected so that person didnt lose their hands. Lol, my jackass-dum comes from being a stupid know it all teenager who in reality dosent know enough to know how much I dont know. Sign me up!
