Just out, Ford has sold Aston-Martin to a group of Kuwaiti investors for some $925 million. Somehow, I find that very sad. But is it any sadder than what has happened to Rolls-Royce and to Bentley? Somehow, Arab Aston-Martins and German Rolls-Royces just do not seem right to me. I guess that I am just too much of a traditionalist.

What next? Does Ford sell Jaguar to some Chinese businessmen?

If it was a decision that would negatively affect American workers, I might care.

Yeah. Did Swedish workers freak when Volvo was bought by Ford? I think right now auto manufacturers, if your name isn't Toyota or Honda, have to do anything they can to stay alive in this market.

Is there no romanticism alive in this group? How many of you remember Sean Connery's James Bond in the Aston-Martin DB-5 in "Goldfinger"? How many of you remember John Steed's (Patrick McNee) classic Ulster Aston-Martin in "The Avengers" TV show in the mid-1960s? He drove it during the period when he partnered with Mrs. Emma Peel played by Diana Rigg who drove a Lotus Elan.

Hmmph!

I'm a romantic. I had the hots for Diana Rigg in the 1960's and I think she still looks good today.

I've read that Toyota doesn't do well in it's own domestic market either. And I bet Ford is thrilled that someone wanted to buy it.

Maybe that'll send the Ford stock up a bit, so I can sell. $$ Cha-Ching!

When it comes to British machinery, I have no feelings of romanticness alive. It was killed by my one time ownership of a MG. It was only then I understood the nickname of "prince of darkness" that was earned by Lucas ingnitions systems. My first and most important requirement of a car of motorcycle is that it run when I want it to run. I have serious objections to standing by the side of the road in the middle of nowhere in the rain, because the prince of darkness has struck again. There's a reason the British auto industry is a joke.

However,

When it comes to Dianna Rigg, I can only think now what I thought then; Thats one classy dame!

Oh yeah!

I am totally with you on this!! This is very sad indeed!!

The Avengers ? The earlier show 'The Saint" with Roger Moore - he drove a Volvo P1800 because at the time they couldn't wait for the British car they wanted !

Steed had a lot of vehicles in the course of the show, but as I remember it his signature car was a big Bentley. A string of them, according to this site, which has an exhaustive, and probably mostly correct, list. Couple of Lagondas in there, too.

The internet has made it even more fun to be a pedant. I no longer even try to resist.

Fuller,

That is bad news indeed, Aston Martin is the only British car company I like (I would also like TVR if not for the apparently abismal build quality).

You know, it's a damn good thing that modern sports cars don't have front leather or vinyl "bras" anymore like they often did in the 80's. Now that Aston Martin is in Kawaiti hands it would probably look more like a Burqa.:)

At one time Rolls Royce cars were made or at least assembled in Massachusetts !And prior to WWI FIAT was assembled in Poughkeepsie NY !

Sad.

I recall reading that Lotus cars is being supplied with Toyota motors.

Actually that's not a new thing. In the early 80's for example Lotus came up with a two seater sports car prototype that had a Toyota motor. Lotus never put that prototype into production, but instead Toyota made a very similar looking car, with the same motor ofcourse that they supplied Lotus for that original prototype. The car I'm talking about is the first generation (1984-1989) two seater Toyota Mr2.

I used to have one, it was my first car.
