I'd like to think that he opened the package, held the knife and felt an overwhelming call from the wilderness.... He looked up from his porch towards the distant mountains (or in whatever directions the closest are) and smiled a little before he started walking in that direction. He hasn't been seen by a civilized soul since.

Hey guys, did you hear about that guy who got a Jarosz knife and disappeared into the woods? I hear that if you look carefully in one screen shot of the movie The Revenant, you can catch a glimpse of him in the background. It's more like his shadow on a tree in the background. But we're pretty sure it's his shadow.
