History of the Javelin Spear
The javelin was a game that connected to the Greek's everyday life, especially to hunting and war. Ancient and modern javelin throwing have one main difference. The athletes of Ancient Greece used a thong or strap of leather that formed a loop at the center of gravity of the javelin. The thong made the grip more secure so it increased the power. The thong also gave it a rotating motion, that stabilized the javelin while it flew and it helped the javelin achieve greater distance. In the rules of the game, javelins were thrown for distance or at a predetermined target. It was thrown from probably the starting line of the stadium. It had to fall within an area defined on three sides, and the throw was invalid if it fell outside this area. Sometimes, it was even thrown at a target and it was usually done on horseback.

I've seen that length also, but the one I based this off of I actually saw on Spike TV, the "Warrior Show". They were doing an episode on Spartan's versus Ninja’s and they said their Javelin specs for it was 3 foot 6 inches long. I liked it, so I thought I'd make it. It seemed a little more handy, being a little shorter than a full size spear. But yes, I did see that length also, when I looked it up on Google.

Thanks. Chris

Chris, v. nice, i like it. 2 questions: how is blade secured to handle; and how well does it "fly" ? i think the purpose of a longer javelin is that it is more stable in flight. i could get a deer with a spear or javelin around my place, even if only a spike; good eating.

I probably should have mentioned that in my post.

I notched the wood four inches. The head of the spear itself has a 4 inch tang. I put 4 pins in it with gorilla glue and filled up the cavity of the notch the tang is in. If you know anything about gorilla glue, it expands an fills up everything. After it expanded I sanded away all the excess and tightly wrapped it with hemp string and then painted Elmer’s glue on the string to make it solid. You would break the wood before you would ever brake out the blade. Very solid.

It flys great. It's like a dart.

Thanks for your comments.
