Jeep Wranglers

Yea, I'm not much of an off-roader. I mean, I spend alot of time in the Pine barrens but mostly on the fire roads, which are groomed.
We get enough snow in Jersey to justify a 4x4 and its nice to be able to get to the remote fishing spots but I don't expect to get stuck much.
I might get a small lift (2in. ish) and some more aggressive tires down the road, when they need to be replaced.

Wrangler's are neat (I like how they're constructed), but for practical purposes, I'd probably get a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Those are pretty cool. I think Kalooch has one, maybe he'll chime in. Wranglers don't seem like a good everyday car.

As far as Car Talk goes, my father listens to it and says they praise Fords but trash on Volkswagens. I'm not sure that in 2006 many people could agree with that after looking at what has happened to Ford in the last 15-20 years :D

What???? The FJ40 is a classic. If you know anything about offroad vehicles it was one of the toughest no frills 4x4 ever made.

Think he's talking about the "new":barf: FJ.

I was talking about the new version. The new version's pic did not appear in the quote box.
The first time I saw the thing in a car rag, I :barf:ed.

I had a Wrangler for a few years as a second car and loved it. Parts and accesories are cheap. Nothing like it on a warm summer's night. Impractical as hell until you get offroad on a narrow trail.

My niece bought one new four years ago.

After alot of weird problems, breakdowns, not to mention being broken into, discomfort, she sold it and bought a FWD Toyota Tacoma. The jeep was very disapointing in reliability.

I had one til about a year ago. Wish I still had it, sold it to help pay off some other things and it was a little difficult when I had to haul 3 year old twins boys around. In a few years when my kids are little older I plan to get another. Just keep the Pros and Cons in mind when you are deciding to buy.

Pros
Goes in the snow, mud, etc no problem
Riding in the summer with the top down is great.
Getting in and out of tight parking spaces is pretty easy.

Cons
Not a smooth ride
Not great for young kids
Lots of road noise at high speeds

Softtops are easy to take off, but they ware out and there is more road noise.
Hardtops have less road noise, but it takes 2 people to get it off.

I had both. I used the hardtop in the winter and the softtop in the summer.

For me it was better to have 2 vehicles than to have the Jeep as a daily driver. I drove my truck when I wanted to be comfy and drove the Jeep for fun.
Also remember the Jeep Wave.

The ride is really smoother than that of the Tacoma the Jeep replaced, I was surprised.

I know its not the safest, but my 2yo and 4yo were loving riding around with the top off.

I dont have to worry about the road noise at high speeds..... Mine wont go high speed:D

By the way, whats the jeep wave?

Same as the motorcycle wave

Jeep owners just wave to each other when passing in traffic
You beat me to it.

The one I had was a used 1998 Jeep Sport. The first week I had it every jeep that came by would wave. I figured that ethier the guy who had it before me was in a Jeep club or I was starting to appeal to the female Jeep owners.:D Then I found out about the "Jeep Wave" and my bubble burst.:o

WOW, I had no idea about the wave. I'm gonna feel like I have friends and everything!

Do Jeep people pull over to help other jeep people too? Just like cycle people. This is gonna be great.

Yeah, they pull over and then they take your doors off and run because it's a lot of fun to do that. Oh, I guess only if you know the other guys.....

Anyone see the new four door TJ? While I like the added room, it sure is getting farther away from my 78 CJ5!

Yeah, I always thought the unlimited looked like it needed 2 more doors. Unfortunately, jeep is going to stop making the liberty and the new compass and the other car look to be total junk. Well unless you like station wagon capable suv vans. They do have to keep making a profit though. Oh let me see my engine was made in italy, assembled in the US, 75% american and canadian parts. Not too bad for a "domestic" car.

The new FJ40's rear seat take some acrobatics to get into for me. The styling is also weird. (BLIND SPOTS) They shoulda just made a 40 and a 60 like they used to. The new 4 door wrangler is what the H3 aspires to be

I wouldn't say that exactly. I test drove an H3 they are probably more capable offroad stock than just about any wrangler out there. They have a super low gear ratio, good suspension, and a capable 4x4 system. That being said they are horribly underpowered, fuel inefficient, the worst part is they put in a small engine trying to be more fuel efficient not sure if 20mpg qualifies them for that or not. Try finding a manual, adventure model (larger tires, lockers, 2" more clearance). It is impossible. All you can find are auto luxury models decked out in chrome, rolling on dubs the size of garbage can lids. So yeah, probably the 4 door wrangler is a better choic.
