Anyone else read Jeff's Article in SWAT magazine about a Survival Rifle ? Kinda Pleading with a rifle manufacture to build a Specific Survival rifle w/Survival kit ? Cool article made mention of the Henry rifle with pic of Ruger 10/22 with Izula and PSK items strolled about.
My question what do you think would be a good 22LR caliber Rifle to build a PSK around ? Bolt action ? Pump ? single shot? Semi auto ? Lever action ?
I am kinda torn I like Rugers Bolt action MK77/22 but I also have a pair of 10/22's that I really like as well. Here is a pic of my 10/22's

Hard to beat the dependability of a good single shot .22. they have always been my favorites, but it really depends on the tasking you have in mind. with the modern assesories and aftermarket mod's available to the 10/22 ruger, i think this discussion can start and end there, it would be hard to beat the versatility of that rifle, it like a small version of the AR, find something you can't do with it, is more likely the challenge.

I personally prefer a good 30-30 lever gun, its still relatively light, carries respectable punch for its size, and with good sights is downright deadly, you can ammo up just about anywhere in the USA too. Girzzly Customs (sexy lever guns for good shooting)

I was just seeking opinions since I have a pair of 10/22's if I built something from that or look for another 22caliber rifle. The only thing about pumps, lever action are the tubes could become damaged rendering the gun useless, semi auto well loose a clip/mag and your down to akward single shot. I like the bolt action and the simplicity of the Single shot less moving parts per say.
now your comment on 30/30 is not so true in my neck of the woods... I visited several places I purchase ammo from and no one had 30/30 ammo in stock after a few weeks I found some at Dick's sporting goods and picked up 6 boxes of Remington core lock 170gr. back to the 22LR

any gun can be damaged rendering it useless, so i will take your objection to tubes, and levers as a personal preference.

You might try the 77/22, then you have magazine duality between your rifles of .22 caliber. (I'm pretty sure of that)

Other than that one would have to assume based on the two rifles you show, that your preferences lean toward the black synthetic rifle, large magazine type. nothing wrong with that, but as I mentioned the options are huge with the 10/22 rifle, which i'm sure you know.

one option for the 10/22 rifle

that is the way my 10/22's are set up now but If I modied one for strctly for a toss in my truck with a PSK then I may lean more towards buying a single shot , I have a pump Rossi 22lr and just not a big fan of it, the Rossi can be broke down and pack easier but I dont know something about it I dont care for...yeah there are more options for the 10/22 you can shake a stick at....

I have always had a special place in my heart for single shots. It really teaches you to shoot when its the only round you have ready, your shooting fundementals have to be solid. (not that mine are that great)

Its getting hard to find a good single shot only rifle, every one wants magazines it seems, or so the manufacturers seem to think so.

I like a good single shot but I like to have one from a good maker as well but finding one is hard like you said

Tony,
My $00.2 is I would go with a bolt action. Less moving parts equal less to break. I am an armorer for work and we use the mini 14 very reliable but you have to keep um clean. For my own PSK I keep a Ruger sigle six in 22 lr and feel very confident to be able to feed me and my family with it. Light weight, easy to carry and 22 ammo is always available. Just my humble opinion

After some very much enjoyable internet searching, I am going to say a Kimber model m82 in .22lr good luck finding what you want, you and I are suffering the same troubles here.

I have a single shot Remington 510Targetmaster and seriously doubt I would require more than a singleshot. However ideally I think a 5-10 round fixed mag bolt action rifle would be the best. 16 or 18 inch mid contour SS barrel, iron sights with a mount for optional optics.

I think a good bolt action would be one of the most dependable actions for all conditions.

They are simple, very strong, reliable, versital, require very little maintenace, and are super accurate.

Semi's are nice, but need alot more maintenance (oil, cleaning, etc.) in dirty (wet & muddy or dry and dusty) conditions to operate correctly.

I think they are expensive, but "cooper firearms of montana" are worth a look if you like single shot nice iron sight models.

This may sound strange to some but for my (wilderness survival rifle) it would not be a rifle it would be a 410 ga. in single or bolt....with an assortment of shot and rifled slugs.....I feel this will cover all bases for the woods.......now urban survival AR all the way baby.......Drew

I'm a huge fan of the 10/22. Extremely reliable(I've shot hundreds of rounds without a cleaning), very accurate(at least the ones I have shot).
As far as loss of magazines, always carry more than one mag. The ten round rotary mags are cheap and plentiful.
I am opposed to scopes on survival rifles unless back up irons are available. Williams makes the Firesight fiber optic sights that work great for iron sights and are better in every way IMO.
Get a bore snake, toothbrush and travel size Break Free or Slip 2000 and your ready to go.
To be more weather resistant, use a composite stock like the one on your scoped rifle.
The Single Six is a great alternative if room is not available for a rifle, but you won't have the effective range of the rifle.

A .30-30?! the objective is to get food.. not obliterate it! Unless you want to go deer hunting for your food, which if that's the case, you're set.

I posted a thread about this article not too long ago. I thought it was interesting. I think we need a new survival rifle out there. Hopefully it'll come from Ruger or Savage.

I'm cool with bolt, lever, or semi.

musta missed your Thread sorry JB.
I'd love a T/C in a 22LR that'd be awesome !

That was a great article.

For a survival kit gun I would take the 10/22 with the folding stock and disassemble the barrel and reciever from the stock. Then I would find a suitable bag or case that will fit the broken down rifle, ammo, and survival kit. With the right case, this could fit in a backpack.
