Jeff's article in SWAT

:D I was leaning more towards natural disater type thing. I really like the looks of the Ruger M77/22 with Iron sights.Using it to take small game to feed your family or self , no for holding off a small gang of looters.

Well that makes it easy!

My Remington 597 has already killed tons of small game in its life.

My AR has never killed anything (only paper/bottles) but it is hurricane season and I am in Florida!

This is my boys critter gitter...Rossi 410 22 combo....Funny thing is that it is the cheapest gun in my safe at 150.00 usd. I think in a wilderness survival sit. I would rather this than a 22. I own a 10-22 with houge stock and 16 in butler creek bull barrel, match trigger and red dot optics. Don't get me wrong it is fun to shoot and hunt with, but I must assume in a survival event with the effects of being tired, nervous, hungry or whatever other physical conditions one would face I would rather have the 410. On small game I can use #6 shot and not have to have as steady of a hand as you would a 22. You can also carry slugs for larger game. They are small and the ammo does not take up as much space as 12 or 16 gauge. The stock on this little thing could hold the contents of 3 to 4 altoids tins, and broken down it would easily fit into my pack. If my six year old can pack this little sucker in the woods all day I would imagine that I would hardly notice it in my pack...Anyway food for thought Tell me what you think.

this is the youth model

Yes the Rossi Matched Pair kits (they used to market them with a rimfire, centerfire, shotty trio) are a very fine quality survival rig and come at an exceptionally cheap price. I'd recommend them to anyone.

they still do my boy also has the 20ga. 243 and 22 combo in classic wood stocks for deer season.....I went with the wood to help with recoil of the larger cal.

Here's some pics of a CZ452 Trainer, or Scout, or something. I don't remember exactly. (I think it was the Trainer.) First, the gun on my...ahem, bench rest.

Then the 200yd group with that setup, which was a little under 7". The gun can do better, but I was shooting open sights w/ bulk ammo off a rolled up jacket.

And later after I put on QD rings and a 3 MOA red dot.

The thing shoots nice, has a decent trigger, and the sights are good. BUT, where it has it all over everything else is the balance. It is a thing of beauty that you have to try. Even if it was technically not as accurate as some other gun, which isn't an issue, I would still shoot this one, because it balances so well you would still shoot rings around anything else.

Oh, and as far as the best survival rifle...if I was buying one specifically for a kit, it would probably be a break action, and definitely with iron sights.

That being said, you could probably make a good case for the Ruger Charger. Easy to carry, lighter weight, rifle like accuracy, repeat shots without any extra body movement. I don't know their exact weight, but they might be cool, especially if you could get a Pac Lite barrel for them and a lighter stock/grip.

I have a Intratec 22 kinda the same breed as a charger or the piccuda made by magnum research before the Charger and to be good with it you need all 30 rounds not a survival type gun for me

it has a threaded barrel for options but finding the barrel extention and other things are impossible only bonus I see is it accepts the same mags as my 10/22's

I have heard of the charger shooting groups similiar or better than the 10/22. It is the same gun, just chopped down. I don't think you would find any similiarity between it and the Intratec. The grip is laminated hardwood, which could give a nice solid rest for the barreled action. The barrel is a 10" heavy barrel, and the gun comes with a nice little bipod.

I don't know if there would be a point to it, just thinking that it could probably shoot about like a rifle, but weigh considerably less and take up less space.

yeah the Charger came from the Piccuda(magnum research) and yes both are re-designs of a 10/22 , not sure of the groupings and what not but the intra tec is simple solid hollow pistol grip with storage space and simple iron sights if the barrel extension could be located it would make a great simple semi auto but I would prefer a single shot or bolt action but for me finding a left handed bolt action is tough.

Thats a first for me, never saw an Intra Tec-22, looks sorta like a tec 9 (no bbl shroud though). Man, that could be fun to shoot in full auto (watch out Mr. squirrel :D)

I just finally read Jeff's SWAT article.

Funny, his biggest criticism was mine: no one makes a stock designed for a kit.

I just found out about these. Called the local gun shop to see if they can get it.
