Jensen Elite Blades: New to me. What do you all think?

I'm surprised there are no opinions on these blades! Nothing good or bad to say about them? The gentleman is obviously a talented maker, if not the most original there has ever been (although I find his designs to have certain improvements over their inspirations). The one thing that caught my attention were his references to differentially tempering ATS-34. I was under the impression that stainless couldn't be differentially tempered. Does anyone have any info on this?

Sorry JD, I was in the middle of a post and had to take of work. It creeps up on me at the most inconvienent times here :p I'll start off by saying that I have 4 in my possession and they all preform exceptional in the respective tasks I use them for. I will finish up by saying that I have paid for three and traded to two more. That makes for a total if five that I am waiting on for. If I am willing to have nine knives from one maker, that says alot.

I have talked to Peter and Belinda and they could not be nicer people. When they are willing to call the states on their dime to discuss different ramifications of the design and how that will impact cost or preformance of something specific I am going to do with the knife, that speaks to me as the end user. They are an undiscovered resource that needs more exposure here stateside. Last I talked to Belinda, she was going to a trade meeting to learn how to submit bids to military and governmental agencies needing tactical "things" Hopefully they will be BIG here sooner rather than later. There is another JEB fan that will chime in here soon I imagine, and he is the one that turned me onto their knives.

If I can help more let me know.

Thanks for the info, Cerberus! I really like some of the knives, and that is why I am looking for opinions and info (especially about the differential tempering of stainless, simply because I have never heard of it being done successfully).

I will post a picture of what I have tonight so you can see what i have used. Peter is very open to doing mods to various blades for what you may need. I have a bushman on order that I had him use a different steel and thickness and convex edge and a matching geko for a shorter companion blade. The other blade on order is a 1 of fighter type that he sent pictures of and I just sent off the trade that netted me the other two.

I have owned a total of three JEBs, I still own two. Thay are tough as nails (actually tougher as they can ean easily chop one in half), and beautiful to boot. The workmanship on these is superb, the ergonomics are very well thought out, and lastly the blades are truly made to be used. The only reason I traded one of them away is because I felt bad for some guy :D (just kidding) actually it was just a tad big for my purposes. Overall IMO they are very underrated knives. JEBs is the shizznit!

Hey now! There is nothing wrong with taking pitty on one of you fellow forum brothers ;)

Oh yeah, what two you still have? Any chance to post pictures?

Sure, I have Gecko with stag handles and high polish,

and an EVO Spec OPS EDC. (the top one)

Of course it's your turn now.

Some of the patterns seem a bit off the wall to me. They look like very good quality and materials. I think I would have to ask myself some serious questions regarding what I would really use some of those blade shapes for. The bushman hunting model is the only one I would have considered for real world use.

The four that I have are a Combat Elite Variant, Combat Elite, and EDC model and the infamous Water Dragon. :D
Please forgive the green, I guess I did not clean after I was finished stroping the edge.

Isn't that part of why we're into this....whole....knife.....thing? I mean, there are people who like their knives, people who like using their knives and then there's us...we also like thinking and talking about them. Let's keep it real here that's the inner nerd aspect of us all.
Now most custom, semi-, and production makers develop and/or evolve their knives based on feedback from users or through creative-practical inspiration of their own. Take the EVO series; In rough design, similar to the Tracker-WSK design collaboration by Beck & Brown yet quite different in execution. In my case it took getting the knife in my hand and using it enough to really know my way around the knife in order to fully appreciate its versatility and ultimate usefulness. Granted it was my curiosity sparked initially by pure aesthetic attraction to it that made me get it, but in my case it was worth it.

Cerb, you have totally abused your alloted time with the Water Dragon. I'll say no more. :grumpy:

MC, I'll have to talk to my son. He has laid claim to it since he is way into dragons. Have you ever tried to reason with a kid :p

It is good though. It is kinda like a tactical santoku, whack a tree down for wood for the fire and then right to the cutting board kitchen duty.

I have heard of these knives and would really love to have one. If I get one I think I would end up getting another one. I would like the EVO just because it looks like it has "fortitude", and the spec ops due to its smaller size. If/when i get one, it definately would not be put in a display case or something like that. If I buy it, I have to use it. That is why I dont buy custom, very expensive guns. I have to shoot them to appreciate them more!!!!!

OH and I have to also say that Peter is one heck of a guy. He sent me an email the other day or so thanking me for putting his website out in the forums. Peter is a great guy and do hope that his knives make it really big here in the US. No need for the Aussies to enjoy such great knives. Oh, and if I get the 2 mentioned above, I have to get the Floro Fighting knife as well. That is how I stumbled onto his website in the first place. For all of you FMA fans out there looking for a no BS style that will help you in the street and not for tournament use only, check out www.florofightingsystems.com. Or look up Raymond Floro on the web. You will see how much this guy has done for being only in his 40's. Raymond is a really great guy as well. I wish he made it to the US more often as well!!!!!!! Bye for now...lee

MC- I agree with your statement wholeheartedly, there definetly is a "geek" aspect to examining all the facets and advantages of a given blade. I enjoy that aspect as much as anyone. I think though we occasionally have to step back and take a look at what consistantly works. I sort of tend to define my mission first and then select a tool, aesthetics don't really play into it.
I think I developed that philosophy after getting into the field w/ a few "cool looking" knives that weren't worth a crap utility wise. Don't misunderstand I'm certainly not saying that the case w/ the JEB blades some of the patterns like the Gecko and Bushman are both aesthetically appealing and seem functional.

I'm speaking not from owning any JEB knives, but as a fellow knifemaker from Down Under. Last I looked 1/4inch thickness D2, flat grinds, satin blasted finishes, canvas Micarta and Kydex sheaths, typified Peter's creations. Peter certainly makes a lot of very aggressive-looking and (as lobo103 put it) "off the wall" designs, he also creates many more understated patterns with his own imaginative flair. That stag handled hunter is certainly one of Peter's more subtle designs.

Many who own his knives (including some of my own customers) rave about them. Having picked them up and played a bit with some of his mid-sized pieces, I can vouch that he looks after the "ergonomics" of his knives very well. The handles are comfortable and secure.

It also helps that everybody who has met Peter says he's a heck of a guy to deal with. You'll get a hard-core working knife from Peter, and no less. Jason.

Thanks for the info, everyone! What are the prices of some of his knives, if I may be so bold as to ask?

I don't have an exact price list. There are so many variables that you can do on one of his knives that I guess it is hard to post it. You can however send an email requesting a price on a knife and Peter or Belinda will get back to you. As a ballpark figure, I have paid from 185.00 up to, may last one, at 491.00, but that price includes changes and personalizations that I requested.
