Jersey,is this crazy?

Hey! But did you see? They're offering free shipping on those thousand dollar polish jobs. What a bargain! :D

Bridger I believe I've seen that sager before...I cant believe the price for the condition, just look at the eye for what its worth. Unbelievable

Mis-stamped coins can be worth some money. I guess the seller thought the same must be true for axes.

Some people put a 'sucker price' on something and just leave it there hoping one will come along. Reminds me of used car dealers.

The triple stamp one to me is definitely worth that kind of money as to its rarity. Those were to have never made it thru inspection and out to john a public. So, there aren't many around. The other ones are up to the individual, as it technically isn't what it's worth to you per se, but more what someone else is willing to pay for it.

With more guys now in the axe game the prices are going up up up. Axes I bought 5 years ago for $10 are now $50 or more real easy. The fad I believe will run its course as shows like survivor man and man vs wild go away. Then in another 20 years it will all come back around again as it becomes the cool thing to do again.

Deals can sometimes be had if one looks hard enough. I just got a minty Craftsman double oval 3.5lb for 16.00 delivered- maybe not a steal but a lifetime axe with a new handle for 30.00. Sometimes you can make out in "lot" buys if you spot a profile in the mix. Poorly written ads can be missed.

Flea markets remain the best chance of a hidden deal but require time and patience. As I arrived Saturday, I saw a young man walking out with a really nice round eared jersey- likely Plumb and a nice looking hatchet... and then I scored a Collins Bonded Jersey with salvagable handle for 9.00. I am not much on haggling, just paid asking price.
I do not have the time or patience for the yard sales... I can only look at so many knick knacks and plates before I hit the limit.

I must say all of this is encouraging. Innumerable folks are so burdened with cash that they insist on buying first time custom axes for hundreds of dollars and then never use them. Perhaps some of this is starting to spill over into the 'used' or 'collector' market. Education is key here. Has always bugged me to see a 'beauty' vintage axe go for $5-10 to a unscrupulous pirate or a vulture and then watch a newbie outdoorsman fork over big bucks for something similar but that is new and fashionable and supposedly better.

Encouraging, but damn, I wish I was into axes when they went for a lot cheaper. It's probably forums like these that have driven up the price for a lot of these axes. If it weren't for this forum I probably wouldn't have ever realized the joy and romanticism that goes with all of these great tools so I guess I'll take the high prices as a price to pay for all of this newfound love of axes and this forum.

Everytime I lose an auction for an exciting piece, I remember all the great Axes I have picked up for less than 20.00 each at local flea markets...Kelly Rockaway for 14, Collins Bonded for 9, Kelly Perfect Jersey head mint for 6...... Ebay has the variety and access to things I will never find locally but treasures are where you find them.

I wanted a GBA American Felling Axe but could not swing 190.00- so I bought a vintage GBA Amercian pattern and a new 32" handle for 60.00 total. Have not gotten to it yet but will soon enough.
