Jfowl31's knife modding/making progression thread

Here is the T-pop that Jordan made for me, to match my Snakewood Viper.
Thank You Jordan, It is just what I had in mind.

A couple more Bullnose mods in the books. Snakewood with all brass hardware and Cocobolo with a NS pivot. Really happy with how these turned out!

The snakewood is some of the best I've ever seen and it polished up like glass! I made a matching caplifter for it too.

The cocobolo was from what I thought was a bland brown block. Cut a slice out of it and this gorgeousness popped out! This one is O1 tool steel as well from an earlier run.

Enjoy!

I had some old Westinghouse micarta sitting around and decided to make myself a beater shop knife. This was a 2007 GEC 73 that was the NKCA knife. The shield had popped off and it had loosened up as the bone shrunk. I took the bump out of the frame so it's more of a flush joint Sodbuster now with a finer tip on the blade.

The micarta is some sort of flat nylon weave. Maybe fire hose? It has a little bit of a translucent look to it in the sunlight and the weave shimmers which makes me think it's nylon. It's so dense it doesn't even want to take on oil and the rosy outside made a nice touch to the color.

My respective responses to these quotes are: "Hahahaha!", "Woah! *drool*", and "That's a really cool idea, and I like the way it turned out."

Cranked up the space heater and spent a little time outside today messing around with some more Farm and Field knives for a couple buddies. Just playing with the stock covers to see what could be done to change them up without a complete rebuild. Pretty decent results! The 99 will get torn down later. I really just wanted to see what it took to haft and shine up delrin and see how deep the shadow bushing went.

Very nice looking modifications. I really like the layered look of the Micarta as you take away the side material. Also, the pivot pin looks like it belongs on a high-end custom, especially compared to the original. How will you know if it is still as strong?

Travman, the pivot is only as strong as the areas where the pin is peened/flared into the bushing. The excess pin doesn't add any strength, just looks. I sanded these down to the point where they are peened into the bushing taking off the excess material that doesn't do anything except house the F&F USA logo. At this point it's as strong as any joint is that is sanded flush...

And the custom look is exactly what I'm going for, so I appreciate it! The 71 is really an elegant and perfectly designed knife once it is hafted down I think. The nice wood covers and nicer micartas just add to the appeal.

I still carry the first one I posted... The ironwood is almost pure brown with oil and dirt and the blade has a good bit of patina on it, but it's one of my favorites of all time at this point.

Ernie, I shut down the doors and cranked up the space heater. Took some time off work to get caught up on the projects and wasn't going to let the cold weather keep me down. Granted it's only 30 here... It's a bit colder in other parts of the country!
