Jim has been fantastic to work with. This experience made me decide that I will probably avoid production knives, and try my hardest to deal with individual knife makers. There is a certain satisfaction that comes with knowing your knife was made from beginning to end by a person. What would be considered imperfections in a production knife are a testament to the fact that mine was handmade. I'm sold on the product.
As far as his business practices are concerned, I'm am equally impressed. I commissioned a knife from him a month or so ago. He allowed me to make payments, as I would have a hard time coming up with the money all at once. After the last payment cleared, he informed me he was finishing the sheath, and I would shortly receive my knife.
Unfortunately, I thought my knife was lost in the mail. A delivery receipt was on my door on Thursday, and when I went to the Post Office before they closed they could not find my package. I caught the mail carrier at the mailbox during my lunch break, and he didn't have my package. When I asked him about it, he acted like he never had a package for me the day before. He even said he didn't remember writing anything, let alone leaving it on my door. I presented him with the receipt (in his handwriting) and asked him to please double check his truck when he had time. I then went back to work. The knife was waiting at the post office when I returned.
The knife is gorgeous. The Maple Burl feels great in my hand. The Alabama Damascus has a beautiful pattern. I can't wait until I can commission another.
Long Story Short: Jim Adams is a great guy, with an excellent warranty, and makes good, affordable knives. Do not hestitate to buy from him.
Oh, and if you're within driving distance, he might even offer to put some meat in the smoker for you.
