It looks like oak to me. John did a lot of oak early on, and he really does a nice torched oak.

I won this knife in a contest that Mykel had way back when, and it is one that Mykel got from John and then modified with a scale finish that consists of micarta, brass liners, and a final later of micarta. It is hefty and very comfortable to grip. The knife also includes a nice, comfortable to use sheath with a very nicely made fire-starter stick.
