I just put together this little fire kit built around one of Stomper's Tin Knives. All of the contents pack nice and neat into an altoids tin.

Open the lid, and you have the tin knife being held in place with two rare earth magnets epoxied into the lid of the tin. On top is a bundle of "shredded" jute twine. I just unbraid it and pull it apart into it's individual fibers. Makes a fantastic nest for an ember.

Under the shredded jute I have the goods. My tiny steel striker and tiny piece of chert I just recieved from tonym. Under that there are two jute bundles dipped in beeswax (not acutally dipped yet, I ran out of time so use your imagination) and an extra length of the jute twine.....and under the twine is a ferro rod I handled in oak and some char cloth.

Using the spine of the tin knife to strike the ferro rod. It makes a *FANTASTIC* ferro striker!

Very cool kit. I wondered about Johns tin knifes, the fit quite nicely, and the magnets are a great idea.

Oh, BTW, Jute rocks.

Looks good! Christian sent me one of his ferro rods, and I have to say, that handle is the most comfortable I`ve held!

Nice kit! I especially like the looks of those Ferro rod handles...you've given them so much character.

cool looking kit christian... i really like those tin knives... those firesteels came out great too...:D

Very nice kit indeed!

I've just noticed though: "Made in Great Britain" on the Altoids tin. I never knew that - I have never seen one here, in all my 40 years! Tobacco tins were all the rage when I was younger.

I've just found an online shop and bought a few tins - thanks for helping me spend my Christmas cash.

nice looking kit, i'd say once you get the cord dipped in wax you will be set for quite a few fires in less-than-optimal conditions!

the tin knife also looks really cool, and good idea with the magnets.

The magnets are a nice idea, but I would be very careful about putting the tin near a compass.

NIB (Neodymium Iron Boron) are stupidly strong - I used to rip them out of dead PC hard drives before they became available to buy. Even small ones inside a steel tin would, I think, put an appreciable field outside the tin.

Just a thought...

Cool kit and nice pictures.

One thought though, should the char cloth and jute be in waterproof bag?

Great pics and good job on the ferro rod handles. Those are really smooth looking. John did a good job on those tin knives, I ought to get one as a ferro striker.

A very solid fire kit!

The cool thing about the Tin knives is the price. For 2009, with every knife ordered from me, they are included free.

Really like the magnet idea. Never tried that type of tinder before. I will get out and try that later today. Ideal conditions today. No wind and I believe upwards of 30*.
