Hey guys.
I received a custom pattern and a LRK+ in a sheepsfoot blade. i love 'em both.

John continues to put up with my "20 questions" and i tend to flip-flop a bit, as well. :D

The LRK+ is great. I am going to get a lot of use out of that sheepsfoot design...i can tell.

But the reason i just had to post is the custom. A couple months back, John posted that thread about ordering knife blanks. one night, i went on a mission to determine which knife i wanted. it was quite a journey. i ultimately discovered a straightback utility that john made a while ago. i then discovered a straightback kephart he made. i liked them quite a bit.

ultimately, i decided on the straight back utility and sent John the order.

a week or so later, one night, i decided to get out some poster board and play around with that design a bit. there may have been rum involved. ;)

as usual, i wanted this knife to be "the one." so, i wanted the handle "just right." i wanted a humpback handle and one with a thinner "closed" grip. i.e. a smaller handle height, if you would.

i also wanted the blade height to be greater than the handle height, ensuring a good food prep knife.

i was pleased enough with it that i pinged John back and asked if i could send him the cutout to replace my SBU order. as usual, he obliged.

approximate specs...
OAL: 9"
blade: 4.5+"
handle: 4.5-"

of course, my mind never shuts off, so a few weeks ago, i started thinking about this knife again. and, i had yet another "super" idea! ahem. :D

i sent John yet another email(s) to ask about grinds. ultimately, i asked if he would put a full height convex grind on it. the answer was "yes" again.

John, i couldn't be happier with how this turned out. and, the grind is PERFECT! love it. thank you.

take a look.

now, i just need to decide on what to use for handle materials. i thought i decided on a nice piece of desert ironwood. but, then i saw some quilted maple. and, of course, i have that handmade nat burlap mycarta too. decisions, decisions.

The shape of that handle fit my hand perfect, so I see another of these in the future. ;)

Nice Todd!

I really am liking your custom design (and I love that block of wood in the picture....)

When I saw the post from my phone, the blade pattern really looked like a Spyderco Military - and now that has me thinking - your design, a little longer with the full flat grind......

Very nice stuff - I'll be watching for your "I put scales on it" thread.

thanks guys. and speaking of FFG, i had John do an FFG on that LRK+. has a secondary bevel on it, but still very nice.

i promised i would spare y'all another WIP thread. but, i am excited...i couldn't help but post just one pic. :D

scales gluing up. i went with desert ironwood over black G10 with black carbon pins and a SS lanyard tube.

Good choice on the ironwood, my favorite material.

oh really? there's a JK piece of trivia! where's Taht's anyway?

it didn't smell too good working with it. pretty pungent stench, but it do like the way it looks. i wanted something "classy" for this knife. ;)

and speaking of pungent...i really need to get a good respirator. i really shouldn't be working with G10 without one.

thanks for the post, John. can't wait to get a better look at 'er.

Oh man. You knew that I was going to love this design didn't you? Very knice!!!

I thought Mack would love that -

Todd - please don't spare ME your wip - I enjoy seeing others do what I cannot!

thanks andy. it just seems i have done a couple WIP's. and honestly, not much is different each time. i would love to see John do a WIP (ahem).

but, if folks like seeing 'em...maybe i will do one for the LRK+. still need to figure out what i am going to do with that one.

thanks mack. i like it very much. i can't wait to see this one finished up. everything about it is perfect (for me). i really hope i don't eff it up. had a problem with the lanyard hole today. there's always something. it must have moved when i pressed the drill, because it was not straight. it took me several tries to get that tube through. the drill wants to follow the same path each time. ultimately, i had to throw a quick round file at it. there is a bit of a gap, but not bad. i put extra epoxy in the hole.

i of course ordered this purposefully "naked." but, after i got it, i seriously considered sending it back to John to have him put a handle on it. it was that nice. the handle fit is great. the balance is perfect. and, the grind is outstanding. it just feels right. ya dig?

i realize i am gushing. :o

You have every right to be proud of that. I think that you doing the handles is a great idea. Even if they aren't perfect, you know that you did it. That is some sweet looking ironwood too.
