Job Opening At Blade Mag: Online Writer

So the take away is quality print is dead?

Not necessarily. Writers for periodicals don't make much money, but ultimately the quality depends on the writer's love of the work and the subject, and frankly, the skills of the editor, who's responsible for the overall planning of the publication.

My hang-up is the social media presence/keyword optimization aspect of it all. I would want to "create content" (as they call it these days) and fire it off to the social media people to get it out there.

Yeah but think of these headlines; "Should Your Next Knife be Titanium" and "Titanium Blade Steel of the Future".

You are all dreaming if you think any print magazine is going to pay you double of what is offered here. John

For what they are wanting, it's a lot of hats. This seems like a job description either posted by someone out of touch who thinks "doing computer" is a single function of a few clicky clacks and not half a dozen other tedious things and/or geared toward someone just breaking into the business that is hungry.

Here's the thing though, anyone who has the breadth of knowledge worth writing something down is going to demand a higher salary. On the flip side, anyone young enough to be able to handle all those responsibilities with ease is going to set up a YouTube channel and clear 10 times that if they are good.

I dont think anyone is crazy expecting a demanding job with an antiquated structure to pay a living wage. I live in very affordable southern Indiana. I pay a guy to hand me the wrong screwdriver more than that because life costs money to even get by.

2x the rate? Nah. No one is paying a writer with an associates and 1 year experience an average starting pay of $80,000 a year. That’s just plain ludicrous. Plenty of people with 4 year degrees that don’t start out at $40,000.

But you don’t get what you deserve.. you get what you negotiate. If someone wants to write and they think they’re worth $80,000, by all means go in there (or Skype, whatever it is) and nail the interview and tell them what it takes if they want your services. Salary isn’t the box many think it is, and often times HR managers leave it out so it can be negotiated. It’s actually a fair starting salary considering benefits and the ability to work remote… but if you live somewhere the cost of living is high, it ain’t for you.

Sorry, you need to have five years on the payroll first. At ten, you get a hat. One of those battered old cordoroy ones that comes prefaded, with the little cloth strap on the back that gets cinched down by the metal flap. You know, real quality stuff.
I know the ones. Ya can't wear it backwards either or that buckle will sink into ya forehead.

I think it's great that BLADE is coming here advertising a job opportunity, but I think it would be a good gesture to invest in a Blade Forums membership if BLADE magazine hunting for talent here.
