I don't know how many of you guys are Johnny Cash fans, but I got his Live from San Quentin Prison cd/dvd set for Christmas and it is awesome! There are two CD's in the set that are really great, and a DVD of the live San Quentin performance which is the best part. It's also got Carl Perkins and the Statler Brothers on it. I don't like ANY country music, but for some reason I'm a big fan of Cash. I guess Cash is more folk than cheesy pop country garbage. It's an awesome set to have! The recordings are a littly bassy, so it helps to turn the bass down and the treble up just a bit.

Go to http://www.accuradio.com/channellist/ and try a few of the AccuCountry country channels. Skip the contemporary and go for the more traditional, and you'll hear some of what he learned from.

Like the lady said, "I like both kinds of music -- country AND western." Anything "pop" is the velveeta version of the original, which you can't judge on that basis.

Johnny Cash fan here - it's the only C-W music I can stand besides the Eagles. :)

It's funny to look back on his career now and realize that he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket -- with a giant handle welded onto it.

Having said that, I liked "One Piece At A Time."

Johnny Cash started off as a rockabilly act. He was in on the Sun Sessions with Elvis, Carl Perkins and Da Killah!!!! Check out the Folsom Prison record...it is even better.

Somebody call me? :D
Needle,If Johnny Cash has a bigger fan here on the forums than me I wish they'd post and let me know.
Congrats on your San Quentin set,Cash was the real deal.

A little OT,but his wife June Carter Cash, who passed shortly before Johnny, said "There are two kinds of people in the world. Those I know and love and those I love and haven't met yet."

That's when you know you've got some good Country music.
I grew up on Johnny Cash , Loretta Lynn , Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard (my favorite) , Hank Williams , Connie Francis , Buck Owens , Marty Robbins - the list is long :D edit - how can I forget George Jones... edit 2 - Tom T Hall also.. the names keep popping up in my head lol..
I used to "hate" the stuff when I was a kid , even though I knew each song by heart and can still sing most of them in the shower , thankfully though my cousins got me on the road to being pretty much a headbanger lol.

Glad you are enjoying such great , classic American music Needle

I liked him the best when he got together with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristopherson in The Highwaymen. I am not a huge country music fan but I know good talent when I hear it. It's great drinking music.

"Desperados waiting for a train" A unusual perspective on growing old.

I have the double CD "Johnny Cash At San Quentin and at Folsom Prison"...That is an EXCELLENT CD!

Also, if you haven't seen the movie "Walk The Line", you HAVE TO SEE IT!!...

Used to go to the Ohio State Fair to see him every year back in the 60's. That was when the Statler Brothers were with him and June.

Actually got his autograph one day, as we just happened to be right by his trailer when they were done with the show. Signed a pamphlet I had. Left it on the bus goin home.:grumpy:

Don't know if it ever came out on CD, but "Johnny Cash in the Holy Land" was a good album too.

Not really a fan of country music, and absolutely hate "modern" country (not good enough to be in the pop charts, so put on a cowboy hat and call it country  ), but thought Jonny Cash was the best thing since sliced bread.
His music was similar to good soul music (not that souless screeching **** they call soul these days), simple songs about what mattered to simple people.

On the San Quentin album, when he sings "San Quentin I hate everything about you", the audience really react, and you can just imagine the guards thinking "Oh **** !"
