Johnson Adventure Blades

***DISCLAIMER***
My spellling and grammer sucks, I dont care. I got no time and too much to do.

Hey Guys Im sorry about taking so long to get some photos up of this potbelly but Im just so dang busey. I finally got a little time today so here is what I quick put togather.

KNIFE USE
I batoned some oak pieces for use in my smoker, most ere 3-4". It splits wood like crazy and I have no complaints.

I chopped some stakes for use in my garden. Most were 1.5"-2" oak. It chopped like a beast. Grip was nice, no hot spots. Knife is well balenced for chopping, chopps a "little" bit better than my BK7.

Some of you might wonder about my gardening techniques but hey, Im broke and red neck so this is what I did. I dont have money for a tiller and Im livin payday to payday so the garden was alot of work. I rigged up some nylon cord run stake to stake for guid lines and used my potbelly to cut lines in the sod. The knife cut through the sod really easy and I cut 4 20foot long rows. Then used a shovel to lift the sod. I live in NC and my soil is rich loam. Shit is great for growin a garden in. Anyway when I was done with this I went in the garage and cut some 550 cord to see how sharp it was, not to bad.

The sheath is awsomeish, I wish it was nylon instead of polyester. It is big. Lots of room. I have a complete mini survival kit stuffed in mine. I list and post that with pics in a couple weeks or so. I would HIGHLY recomend this knife for backpacking trips and hunting trips. Day trips, forget it, its a monster. Its like a cross between a BK2 and a BK7 with a little bolo thrown in there.

The pics I have included are pics I took when I first got it. I will post the used pics when I post my survival pouch pics. If your on the edge of making the decision to buy this, BUY IT. You get a great knife and a one of a kind sheath.

Laters yall.

My next knife WAS going to be a black USMC KA-BAR with the kydex sheath, but your review and the pics have got me second guessing. The KA-BAR ain't going anywhere, I suppose.

How is the sheath retention? Will the BK7 fit in the sheath with any kind of security?

Thanks for the pics. I can't wait for more. Any word on whether or not JAB will get its own manufacturer forum?

I was a little lacking in details on the sheath so here it goes. The sheath is big, between a BK7 and a BK9 sheath. The pouch on the front is "perfect size". I fit the following in it.

-Pouch kit

Emergency blanket
12' 550 cord wraped around blanket
FOX whisel
small compass
spray tube of 100% deet
anti shit your pants pills
anti saturday morning pills
bandaids
small bic lighter
fero rod
US military survival fishing kit "fishing line around a small plastic frame with a couple hooks"
two split shot
water filter straw

As you can see its pretty cool that you can fit all the essentials in this sheath. If you go out hunting make sure this guy is on your belt and you are good to go. Ive always been worried about loosing a day pack when I was out and about hunting, "I dont know why I would loose it, just a fear I guess".
Anyway, you cant loose your essentials if there secured on your belt.

RETENTION
Retention in the sheath is pretty great. There is almost zero rattle in the plastic liner. The liner is square shaped and pretty snug to the blade. I put my BK7 in the sheath and it rattled around alot do to the fact the sheath is made to house a knife with a .250 thick blade. I have though about JB welding some small but powerfull magnets to the back side of the sheath to retain the blade to the side of the sheath without replacing the liner. I put the magnets on the backside of the sheath without glueing them and it seemed to work pretty good.

RIGGING
The sheath has a large loop at the top for sliding on a standard belt or pistol belt. It also has 6 molle loops on the back that you can rig onto your gear using mallice clips. Malice clips can be had online for a few bucks for a few. There are also two eyelets on the bottom of the pouch for a leg string. The sheath is pretty well desighned overall. I do have a small gripe and that is the draw cord on the pouch is BRIGHT ORANGE POLY CORD! WTF! also this knife come with 12 feet or so of "ADVENTURE CORD", wich is poly cord the same dia as 550 cord.:jerkit: I laughed when i looked at it and threw it right in the trash.

Well guys I will try to get some hard use pics of the knife up tonight along with some more detailed sheath pics, laters!

so, in a brutal fit of curiousity and wanting something new and vaguely kukri like in lieu of a machax, i ordered a Potbelly...

it showed up Caturday...

wow. what a knife. 0.25 inches thick. hefty. not as long as i thought it would be for some reason, but held up again the likes of a BK-09, or a Bravo2, or such, it's definitely THERE. solid. VERY nice fit and finish. KaBar has a winner.

the blade is razor sharp out of the box, and so is the free [limited time] companion blade integrated into the sheath (which is as fantastic as mentioned above). good times.

the handle with the "pebble finish" to me is more reminiscent of ray-skin! yah, really. not sure if they were going for that, but with the contouring on the handle, and the overall shape, it just sticks to your hand. nice.

if i had ordered it for my camping trip last time, it might have got a workout, so for now, it's sitting on the table being admired.

this is ONE stout beasty.

You beat me to it. Mine should be arriving tomorrow. I'm tempted to return it, however, as it looks like I will be working out a trade that is going to put a KA-BAR Short Heavy Bowie into my hands. With a KA-BAR USMC, BK7, the Short Heavy Bowie and a Potbelly... well, that is quite a few 7 inchers.

I'll be sure to post my impressions once I get the knife. From looking at it, I was thinking the same thing about the ray skin. I'm really looking forward to at least handling it, even if it does result in a return.

Some pics of my new Potbelly. The first grip pic is the way I seem to like holding the knife the most, but it really accommodates all sorts of grip options nicely. I also included some angles of the AdventureGrip handle along with its contours. Lastly, some pics of it side by side with the BK7 and USMC as well as a thickness comparison with the BK7.

Any new thoughts or feelings on the sheath since you have had it for a bit?

Yes, Im glad you brought that up. "I frickin hate it". The concept is great, and good for hunting or extended backpacking, but thats it. As far as day hiking or yard use its just retarded big. I plan on making a kydex sheath for this thing. It would be wise of KA-Bar to offer a compact kydex sheath otherwise this knife is going to sit in most peoples collection drawer because its to akward to carry.

Those were my thoughts of it when I first saw it, the idea of having a little pouch on a sheath for say a single sharpening stone, is a good idea but that thing looks pretty large and as if it would almost just get in the way most the time.

My opinion is if manufacturers had multiple sheath options for sale they would great increase there number sales. A nice low profile kydex sheath, and nice leather sheath, and say a larger nylon one with a pouch.

I know the logistics of doing this would be a pain for them but I know people would buy them so they could use the same blade in different rolls.

i used the included cord to spiral wrap the pouch so it was flat. it's as compact as the BK-09 Combat Bowie is, possibly flatter. i can still access the small blade too.

retention on the knife in this sheath is SOLID, and well, *i* think it's one of the best commercial included sheaths i've seen lately. for me, the golden standard is the old style Eagle sheaths === teh awesome.

it's funny, i often hear people asking for more storage, bigger pouches, moar moar moar. now we want less :)

You just can't win, can you? Just like the weather, it's never perfect...

but the outside is always outside :>

actually, the JAB-potbelly is probably one of the more perfect new knives i've seen in AGES. awesome. it's sweet KaBar has it.

if Siegle made one, it'd be just as perfect, come with Kydex, and cost $300 :)

I picked up a Potbelly today. My first impressions are very good. The knife is very comfortable and well balanced. I even like the sheath and the little Piggyback. My only gripe is that, the grind on the secondary bevel is a bit uneven and has some burrs. Minor problems, nothing that I could not fix easily.
