Because there was a time the American knife market was losing to Japanese manufactured knives in 420j2 as far as stainless-steel sales. People new to stainless steel could sharpen up 420j2 quicker than 440 Series steels on USA made knives and 420j2 was cheaper. So Latrobe designed 420HC to compete against imported knives with a mildly better steel. American knife brands also learned they could get a higher profit margin using 420HC so they ditched the 440 Series and kept the prices unchanged.Agreed. I do love my three dot 1980-81 110's in 440C. Not sure why they switched to 420HC. But Buck and Paul Bos sure do it well.
