Journey Towards A Great Knife

Thanks Velitrius! The Urban Trapper is definitely on my radar. Slim and "gentlemanly", and would be great for carrying around the office for sure. Leaning more towards the Exskelibur myself. A bit beefier, but still slim and pocket-friendly. A bit more pricey than the Urban Trapper though.

Got to finally cleaning out some old storage today. Mostly junk I couldn't bear to part with that I had when I was a kid. Call me sentimental. :P

Found this ...

Was my first "big boy roaming in the bushes" knife I used when I was maybe 12. I'd throw it at trees, carve up all kinds of things, and generally just pretend I was a survival guy. Custom (paper and tape) sheath with lanyard to attach on my leg. Going to restore the blade and give it a few tosses for old times sake.

Just wanted to document another leg of my knife journey, from the early years.

A few more steps along my journey...

Made the jump passed $100 last week and got the Boker Exskelibur to have with me around the office. A bit bigger than the Kershaw Amplitude 3.25 I've been carrying the last month or so and feels even nicer in the pocket. I like the front flipper style with not having that extra tab hanging out. And now I don't have to worry about any ambiguity of legality with the deployment mechanism. I know Kershaw's SpeedSafe assisted opening is perfectly legal here in Canada, but I didn't look forward to a day when I'd have to try making that case to an officer. :P

Of course, I had to get the obligatory Opinel. Seems like something that I just had to add to the collection if I'm going to consider it anywhere near "well rounded." lol Pretty impressed with it actually. As well as the Ka-bar Mini Dozier.

Then there's my "big boy", the ZT 562. That fella is going to be my go-to knife when I need some real work done and I want something tough and durable. I think that one impressed me the most. Flies open so smoothly, feels super solid and comfortable in the hand, and was probably the first knife I couldn't help saying "Oh yeah" when opening for the first time. Even after doing tons of research then ordering, I had the lingering doubt that I could've spent much less and got something comparable. After trying it out earlier, my doubts are gone. :)
