Jungle Boots

Excellent stuff right there! I've had luck with the Thorlo's you can find just about anywhere, but Smartwool is the name I keep hearing.

Sorry about the thread drift, but whatever you do & whatever you buy, try and see if you can check the boots out in person. Some run narrower than others and some wider or shorter.

Why can't the shoe and boot people just standardize the damn system they've got? I run size 11 in Vans, size 10 in Bates and Lugz, size 8-9 in boots. What the hell kind of a system is that.... :grumpy:

I used to wear superfeet a lot but somehow my feet just grew and it became too narrow. It really sucks 'cos when i wore 'em my feet felt less tired so i could walk longer. You can also get superfeet to make you a custom footbed. They're great and gives a lot of support. But i don't recommend them for jungle boots though. Jungle boots are designed to take in water and i don't know whether superfeets are designed for the wet.

As for socks so far i've seen thorlo make the best combat boot sock. Black and very long so it'll fit high cut boots like jungle boots. I only wear smartwool, bridgedale or thorlos. Smartwool is the favourite although i haven't seen 'em make socks for combat boots.

I wore my Meindls with the original footbeds when Spiglet and I walked the Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path. As I'd always done up to that point, I wore two pairs of socks; an inner, wicking layer and an outer wool sock. The result was that my feet were torn up at the widest point.

Last year we went to Aviemore, which has many outdoorsy shops. I started talking to a bloke in one of them. He recommended Superfeet custom insoles. To cut a long story short, I ended up buying a pair. The fitting process is a little long-winded, and involves wrapping your feet in plastic bags which then have the air withdrawn from them (to vacuum-fit the insoles to your feet!) It's a bit weird, but the results are excellent. The customs are ~ £70 ( ), but they come with a 6-month money-back guarantee.

I now wear the Meindls with just the Superfeet custom insoles and one pair of socks: relatively lightweight Smartwools.

Result? Happy feet!
