Jungle Knives, Quick!!!

Last time I was at a Barteaux web site, I seem to recall that they make a light duty and a heavy duty machete. I wonder if the .09 one was a light duty? My old Barteaux measures 0.11"

Has anyone seen or used the Bushmaster machete? I was at their website this morning and they make a pretty spiffy looking machete out of 420 stainless with a Rockwell hardness of 52. Finish is satin. Handles are in pakkawood, micarta, stag, and bullhorn.

The blade is tapered distally--2.5mm thick at the tang and 1.5mm at the tip.

Talk about coincidence. I also picked up an issue of Combat Knives today and the Bushmaster Machete was profiled. Needless to say, they raved about it. Quote: "Suffice it to say, the Spanish-made Bushmaster Machete is in a class of its own, and few, if any, other production machetes offer craftsmanship that is even relatively close."

Prices are in the $155 to $185 range. If anyone is interested, the website is: http://www.miamimachete.com/

Jeff :

The Ontario's edge is much thinner than the RCM.

While the Ontario's are of thinner stock (1/8 vs 3/16 (?)), the RCM has a full flat grind as opposed to the very short sabre grind of the Ontario. Depending on how Newt grinds the actual bevel, the RCM edge profile could easily be thinner than the Ontario, Matthew's is for example and his RCM outcuts his Ontario on light vegetation.

Has anyone tried the Ontario 12" "Bowie" machette? It`s pretty much a clip point 12" Blackie Collins made from slightly thicker 1095 blade stock. They sell for around $17 and may somewhat split the difference between the 18" Ontario and the RTAK (???). Marcus

You might want to think about what you plan on cutting before getting a machete shorter than 18".I have used shorter blades for bushwacking when I thought I just didn't want to carry the longer blade or didn't have one with me and I have lived to regret it.Right now I have the blisters from some poisonous plant or another on my right hand as well as numerous thorn cuts from using too short a blade.Even corn leaves cut like crazy when they are wet and the cut burns like crazy too.
