Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone that might be thinking of spending some points at the ShopAmEx website.

One of their vendors is a website called UnbeatableSales.com. They sell everything from knives to furniture. The prices aren't as good as you'll find on a real knife site but I was cashing in Am Ex points for what amounted to a free Spyderco.

I ordered the Spyderco UK Pen Knife. Shipping was fast and e-mails and tracking were very good.

For the "Bad": The pic on their webste was a full flat grind UKPK. What arrived today was a saber/hollow ground UKPK. I'm not terribly disappointed. It cost me about 15 minutes. No big loss.

I just wanted to let anyone thinking of shopping there that the pics on their site don't always represent what is in stock or what you'll get. I'll avoid 'em in the future as they aren't knife folks and miss out on a lot of the details.

This is the pic:

This is the list of attributes from their site:

# Blade Detail: Plain
# Blade Length (inches): 2.94
# Blade Material: GIN-1
# Carry System: Pocket Clip
# Handle Material: FRN
# Lock Style: Liner Lock <----------
# Overall Length (inches): 6.19

Knowing it was a UKPK I could overlook the "liner lock" thing.

I'll give them an "A" for effort in shipping but a "D-" for knowing what they're selling.

.

Given that the FRN UKPK doesn't come in full flat grind, it looks like a combination of someone who doesn't know what they're buying, and a "drop ship" or "pass thru" dealer who relies on artwork and descriptive data provided by their distributor, most likely MOTENG who are famous for creating pictures of blade/handle combinations that never existed and combining them with inaccurate descriptions, and sells products they know nothing about without ever looking at (and in some cases without ever having physical possession of) the product.

I'll agree with the not knowing what I'm buying. I'm a Spyderco fan but can't say that I'm up to snuff on every model. Especially the UKPK. Still learning.

Thanks for the MOTENG link. That makes two lessons learned for me.

I really wish Spyderco could afford to drop Moteng as a distributor. IMHO, even though they've sponsored a lot of Sprint Runs, they also do Spyderco considerable harm between the "creative" artwork and descriptive data they provide and their encouragement of "drop ship" dealers who, at least in some cases, have no investment beyond a website and sell at prices no stocking dealer could compete with. Such dealers are, IMHO, nothing more than an end-run by Moteng around Spyderco's rule that distributors cannot sell current production knives to retail customers.

Not only that but the blade they show says it's S30V. No matter that the product description says GIN-1, some folks will see that picture and be in for double the disappointment if they order it expecting S30V. You know how many times it gets said about prototypes that the steel shown may not/will not be what's used in production but there's always someone who thinks it is because they saw a picture that one time and figured it was gospel. For a distributor to make them up and just add to the confusion is really inexcusable in my book.
