Just bought an Edge Pro Apex

Like what? Mine will be here Tuesday. Fill me in so I can get great edges.

Where Ankerson said; "Just remember that everything that is most important in freehand is also important when using the Edge Pro. " It really is the key to good sharpening, no matter which system we use.

VERY well said. to me edge pro IS hand sharpening. the device only eases a part of the process, angle holding (ok ... the most important one). but all the basics have to be mastered the same, burr creation, removal, let the abrasive do the work, removing scratch patterns etc ... all the advices you hear for freehanding are important when using the edge pro.

I know. I was asking what those important things are.

It won't take you long as you have a lot of experience freehand sharpening.

I finished up my S90V Manix 2 tonight and the freehand knowledge is definately helping me get up to speed pretty quick. After de-burring after sharpening on the 220 it was tree topping, S90V just loves to get sharp at coarse grits. I went all the way to 6000 tape and it whittles hair real nice, but S90V just doesn't seem happy with a polish. I've been doing 320 to 600 grit diamond edges on it freehand to get agressive tree topping sharpness, and it just doesn't seem worth the effort to polish it out. M4 on the other hand I can't wait to take to .05 microns for a real test of just how sharp I can get a knife on the edge pro.

Sounds like you got the bug now. :D

I seem to be drawing a parallel between this thread and a bunch of drunks in a bar assuring each other they don't have a drinking problem...

Crimson- I remember my adjustment period with the E.P. being over pretty quickly (less than a week). At that time you should be comfortable holding the knife or stone arm in either hand while sharpening- I purposely forced myself to use my non-dominant hand more often on the sharpening stones to adjust more quickly and avoid favoring the dominant hand. It was at this point where I used a careful combination of the Sharpie trick and the polishing tapes and observed hairs flying off my arm as if subjected to tiny grenade blasts... it only gets better from there.

THAT is a sharp knife! Well done!

Now, try stropping it on a piece of good quality shell horsehide.

The silicates in horsehide are as small as 0.01 mics in quality hide. The blade can 'slide' through toilet paper!
