Just can't warm to SAKs

The Climber Plus has everything but the file and is pocket-able. A Classic or Rambler on you key chain and you get all your needs met.

ETA: the Mountaineer is the same as the Climber but also has a full size metal/nail file.

The Mountaineer lacks
+ Eyeglass screw driver (and certainly doesn't have one long enough to reach inside most recessed screws)
+ #2 Phillips screw driver

Other suggestions?

ETA: I already carry 2 tools, an Opinel and a Micra. The point of this thought experiment is to find a single SAK that can match or exceed the functionality of my current EDC combo. I've not found one, but my interest in SAK starts to wane as the layers and extra tools mount.

Is it me, or are things just hot in here?

SAK, First class materials, perfect fit, perfect finish, so strong it will be your friend for life, and the lives of your great great grandchildren's since 1884; did I mention perfect crinking?

But, but, can your Opi and Mic tell time???

pinnah, this was in my last post and to me it will always apply.

"A comparison of the two just doesn't work---to many uses/variations"

Just so you know, I APPRECIATE those that don't like SAKS, I HONESTLY do. I grew up with them so I'm comfortable with using them.

There are SAKS like the Cybertool 29/34 that far exceed (tool wise) the combo you show and yes there's a flat blade bit just for electronics. If not then there is the eye glass screwdriver that by comparison to your Micra falls short length wise as will your flat blade compared to the 4mm that fits into the socket on the Cybertool.

The Cyber tool is way thicker, by how much I don't know but thicker than your Opinel (I love Opinels also).

So you may just be right that there is NO one SAK that meets your combo exactly but there are SAKS that your combo won't compare to as well.

So I come back to this quote, "A comparison of the two just doesn't work---to many uses/variations"

I respect and truly see your combo as a terrific set for you. Respectfully there are many areas your set will fall short of what I carry for my uses:)

So, I will say---I can't find anything from Swiss Army that beats your combo of tools for you. For my uses, I can:thumbup:

Just so you know---there are no issues with me towards you at all, your a long time valued member but I think we just agree to dis-agree;)

Happy Thanksgiving:thumbup:

Sorry I couldn't help. Sounds like you should keep totin' what ya got.

Actually the Mountaineer would work very well. There is a small precision screwdriver that goes into the corkscrew. All of the Plus models come with them, but they can be purchased seperately. The screwdriver on the can opener also works very well on philips screws (surprisingly well actually).

The progenitor to the Mountaineer, the Grand Prix (older version) has both a Phillips and a fine screwdriver. Probably won't fit eyeglasses but still a neat toolset in a 4 layer SAK.

Not my pic.

That's my main use for the can opener on the SAK's; the SD tip acts so well as a flat phillips driver. The blade of the can opener works great pulling those long heavy duty copper staples out of cardboard boxes some stuff comes in. But it really shines as a pistachio nut opener of those nuts that have just a tiny crack and defy thumbnails. The SAK can opener pulls them right open. Same for walnuts and pecans.

The use of SAK tools is limited only by imagination, or lack of.

And I thought I was the only one who used the SAK can opener for pistachio nuts. Those nuts with the slightest of cracks are helpless now.

Agree that the SAK tools are only limited by our imaginations. I've seen this mentioned a lot, but the SAK bottle opener / large flat screwdriver blade is very good for opening cans of paint and stain, which I work with frequently. They're tough little buggers, and don't flinch even with old rusted lids. The nail file on my Cadet is very effective for the smallest of phillips screws, as well.

I can get by with out a lot of things a SAK isn't one of them! The Deluxe Tinker center is my most used knife period! The Pioneer and top SAK share the same tools one for heavy use the other for lighter use. The SAK is always my go to knife if I have to disassemble my .45 and 9mm mags.

...
That there is sheer genius. I never thought of using it for that before, I've always risked mutilation and disfigurement using the knife blade on them. Crackin' Ibach style!

The Victorinox can opener is also a great pot hook, for getting that pot of stew off the fire. You hook the pots bail with the blade of the can opener, using it just like a hook, with the open side up.

The Vic can opener SD tip also fits the sight adjustment screws on a Smith and Wesson revolver with adjustable sights. Same for the Williams fool proof peep sights on a rifle.

I've found a dozen different uses for the Vic can opener.

+1 I usually keep a Soldier/SI in every range bag!

Had a box of cigars stuck in the mailbox today. Leaning out the truck window one handed, it was impossible to get my fingers around it but the Farmer's can opener fished it right out!
