just dropped a 200 dollar flashlight down a gutter--so what now???

I think someone else might have suggested it, but call you town's public works department. Somebody there can probably assist you. I know a lot of the guys on the town crew in the town I live in and items (i.e. keys usually)dropped into catch basins are a common problem according to them. It's worth a shot.

I just tried a rare earth magnet on an aluminum flashlight with AA cells in it and it lifts it easily. I don't have anything that takes 123A cells -- can somebody else give that a try and post their results?

I tried the batteries by them self and they stick to a magnet pretty good but the magnet would not pick up or even pull my Surefire G2 with batteries in it. Maybe I don't have a powerful enough magnet but I did what I could.

well i need it by friday next week because i work as a bouncer and need that light, but i think right now im gonna tie a chemlight to a smaller rock and see if it sinks or gets dragged down stream before i bother cracking it open with a crow bar. one thing i aint doing is going in there right now while im drunk....next thing you know im starring in mimic 3 ;)

HAHA I busted up laughing at the Mimic 3 reference

Im glad that got a laugh out of you, when im not busy trying to be a professional hard-ass im a total nerd ;)

i did the rock thing and it stayed so im guessing its down there, it started raining this week just in time for me to be about to attempt it.... i might give that public works thing a shot.... either way im still almost in disbelief

5 days and 4 pages later and still no flashlight? I could have driven there and done it myself by now. :D

Just busting your balls. Let us know how it turns out! I am curious to see if it is still there after about a week.

How bout you just try the shop vac idea?
Then you don't have to worry about it raining while you're down there, you don't have to worry about needles, poison gases, or touching dead hookers.

CA my pelican flashlight was easily lifted by a magnet, two 123 batteries.

Aha! You could get a big rare earth magnet for a lot less than $200. Maybe not locally.... If you can get hold of a good magnet you might still have to go down there but you can feel around with the magnet in your (gloved) hand....

Wouldn't you like to know ;)

ive got alot on my plate right now. i get around to it, i get around to it. either way ill post it up here

For the record, I just tried lifting my Surefire G2L (just like Mauser's) with 2 Foxconn magnets out of that harddrive I was talking about, worked perfectly. Plus, they were both on little sheets of metal that have 550 paracord sized holes on all three corners!
Also, to give you an idea of strength on these magnets, they can open a slipjoint with a backspring tension of 5 out of 10. Pretty strong.
Go to a junkyard and grab a hard drive out of the computer parts pile (they prolly have one) and tear it apart for the magnets, then retrieve your light!
