Just Finished The Rising Sun Survivalist Knife

I wish people would just let the man post his knives so we can discuss the knives and their usefulness without having to slap the spam label on paid makers who were once encouraged to post their work here by the mods. That 'guidelines' thread chased a lot of us away, and I thought it was badly done.

I somewhat disagree. It's a slippery slope. Members pay to sell in the appropriate forums, not on every forum on the site. If a few select makers are allowed to post their wares, then all makers should be. Which leads to manufacturers posting their knives. Which leads to importers posting their knives. Etc. Now I've posted a couple of my sheaths in this forum, but never anything that was for sale. One I made for myself and one for Spooky. And a couple of posts asking for input. I probably won't even do that anymore.

I agree with Kevin. If makers want to post themselves using their knives, that's one thing, but the forum shouldn't become a maker's gallery. There are forums set up just for that.

Did the man say these were available? Did he even try to sell this one? Did he mention a price? Did he link to a for sale page? No he didn't. He posted his work and asked for opinions. He didn't do anything that you didn't do WRT your sheaths (which I don't think was spam either).

Before posting pics of my knives around here I asked Brian and was encouraged to do so. That doesn't sound like any slipery slope.

On the knife. Its not my style. That means little. I've watched your work AH, and while your stuff is almost diabolically opposed to my own, I like that I can see your passion in it. And there is also constant improvement also. So find a spot where you are welcome to post it, and post away brother. Its a real shame. I'd have loved to read a bow tutorial.

Maybe we could talk Spark into a subforum of W&SS for makers whose knives would be of interest to this forum. I think that would be a solution that would satisfy everyone. Brian and Kevin, would this be an option?

I see the Wilderness and Survival Skills forum as a place to show off the application of blade use, not just blades. The knife maker's gallery is the place for makers to post pictures of their blades if they aren't being put to use. If anything, I'd advocate for a "survival knife" or "bushcraft knife" or "woods blade" prefix to posts in the gallery. I think this forum should be 90% skills and discussion and 10% blades and gadgets.

But thats not how it was before you came aboard. And your co-mod invited the showing of blades by makers who participated here. If the forum is to be as you see it and no other way, then so be it. I'll stop argueing.

I pitched this idea in S&S if anyone wants to weigh in.

Fiddleback,

Well, board discussions aside, the most important thing I have personally taken from this thread is to remember that people have different tastes in knives and if you're making what you like and you're liking what you make, then you should go on doing that and not worry too much about what other people tell you.

Years of having a gf with a big cheesecake website taught me that no matter what, there are a lot of guys on the internet that will tell you your girlfriend is too fat, too ugly, too tall, too short, too old or too plain.

I have heard it all in regards not just to a knife, to an actual human being that I actually love! So I understand what it feels like.

But I didn't let it make me stop loving her. It just made me realize that in the court of public opinion, everything is fair game and the jury is not going to give you an easy time.

So keep making knives the way you want them made, and enjoy both the process of making and the process of using.

As long as you're enjoying life the way you want it lived...you are automatically a success in my opinion.

AH - I hope you will join in our conversations going forward and show your knives off and what they can do.

Well I'm embarassed of how we treated Archer..... everybody jumped on him, including the administration... which I thought was in poor taste. This subforum is here because of Blade Forum's.... Makers, collectors and dealers. We act like we own the place (like a spoiled child). The OP's openning lines were asking our opinions not throwing a sales pitch.

That's not a knife that I'd take to the woods, but I wouldn't mind having in my safe or on my mantle. The blending of a Rambo knife with an Asian bent is too cool. I'm not sure about "substance," but it sure has style!
