Wow, I go camping for a couple of days and come back to this :D
Another beauty! I really like that handle and guard combo!
What does that bad girl weigh?
And...as I've said before...
The hits just keep on coming!

I would just as soon grind a sword as another of this style and length,I would also rather grind a Dagger than this straight of a Blade.

A sword... Hmmm... Don't get me started. :)

The design evolved from the Ames Rifleman Knife. The Ames, however, has a straight horizontal handle (of about the same shape here) and a straight guard. I personally have come to appreciate more a slightly dropped handle for better chopping/slashing. I wanted a "S" guard to break up the rectangular lines of the original. I also asked -- have to wait and see -- that the guard be shaped like three connected ovals from a front view -- two small ovals (top and bottom) connected by the larger oval in the middle.

I like long clip point bowies more, but I wanted to add a spearpoint to break out a bit. Having seen some of Bruce's "San Francisco" (Price) style inspired work and owning some of his bowies, figured he could pull if off with his artistic aplomb. :)

Seems, Bruce, you can pull anything off. A sword -- if you haven't made one -- may be a good challenge! :D

Thanks for all the kind words here everybody,I really apriceate them.
Here is a picture of the first and only sword that I have made to date.I made it about 4 years ago.It has a double edge 21 inch blade forged from 5160,Brass and cowhorn make up the handle and guard, yes it is a framed handle design.

Sing, I did get the shape You wanted for the guard also.I will get some other pictures for you today so you can see the whole knife.
I don't know why the straightness in this blade messed with me like it did, guess I will just have to try another and see if it will grind out any easier :)

Both are very nice I like the shape of the handle on the bowie. ( slightly out of line with the blade butt dropping slightly, how does this feel in hand compared to your coke bottle type?)

I am going to have to try some of that decorative pin work

This is really a comfortable grip and does make the knife veryu accurate on thrusts in my opinion.
Bruce
Thanks for the kind words everybody.....:)

Beautiful knife, Bruce! As Chiro said, not really my style blade, but it looks great anyhow. I love the shape of the handle, and the nickel/steel furniture looks perfect with it. I like brass okay, but then when I see something nice in that silver, there's just no comparison, IMO.

That wood looks fantastic. Any chance of a better closeup on it? From a distance, the grain in the forward part looks so wild I wondered if you'd even sanded it enough. The contrast with the dark brown at the end is gorgeous!

Like the sword too, tho they "ain't my thang." Great handle on it too. Have to admit I'm not a real big fan of the coke bottle or coffin shaped handles. If the blade isn't too heavy, I'm sure that the balance and feel is far better with the dropped handle.

Keep it up. You just keep cranking out great stuff! Can't imagine forging in a Mississippi summer. Be sure you don't get dehydrated.

Is there anything you can't do Bruce? Looks great man! I love that handle shape and the material. Please post a closeup if you can. If I'd have known you had that gorgeous wood I would have begged and pleaded for you to send me a chunk along with that damascus bar. Keep up the good work!

Yes Peter there are allot of things that I can't do yet......But I am learning more every day.
In about a month I am going to start going to Alex Daniels shop 2 -3 times a week like he has ben trying to get me to do for a year now and since business has slowed down some atthe moment I figured that I would take him up on his offer to teach me how to make the traditional types of Bowies and sheaths and start cleaning up my fit and finish even more.
It out to be a fun time and I hope that I can really start showing you guys some nice knives and also pass on some tricks and stuff that I learn from him.
Bruce

Constant Improvement...looks like you've got it down Bruce.
What's the handle material. I love the way you laid it out so the dark swirl came out on the butt end. Chilly
