I thought red and black flannel was also acceptible, especially if it's worn as one of those caps with ear flaps.

this true, but red and black flannel was a redneck fashion about 40 years ago when it was still in Vogue.
being a redneck is tougher then you think with all that pressure about fashion.
it's like 30 years ago showing up at hunting camp in a Toyota pick up truck.
