Just For Fun

Since we are talking handguns, does anyone else find the .44 mag easier to shoot than the .357? I love my 686 but I think, for me, the various .44's that I have shot seem to have a different kind of recoil. The .357 recoil feels "sharper" and more abrupt than the .44. I realize that some of that has to do with weight and barrel length but I do notice a general difference between the two in felt recoil.

Good pick on the Ruger - simple, rugged, reliable, stainless, but I'd still think about the calibre - a .44 or .45 together with a Kephart.

Since I can`t buy anything new, I ha to pick one I already own, otherwise I would like to get a short barrel .45 SA.

That's my limited experience as well. I think most of the .357's I've shot have been significantly lighter than the .44's I'm used to (which are Ruger Redhawk's and Blackhawk's). The weight of the gun makes a significant impact IMO.

Call me a wuss,but I've had 3 Blackhawks,1 Super Redhawk,1 Dan Wesson,1 Contender & 1 Anaconda in 44 & could only shoot the Anaconda worth a damn & it was Mag-na-ported.
Something about the 44s recoil doesn't like me.
On the other hand I haven't shot a .357 I didn't like.
1 Blackhawk,1 Dan Wesson,2 Security Sixs & my latest the GP100.
I had a Bisely Blackhawk & regular Blackhawk in .41 & could shoot them no problem too.
Damn 44 mag.,it just don't like me!
I've also had a Contender in 30-30 & an Encore in 7mm-08 that I could shoot no problem.
Damn 44 mag.,it just doesn't like me I say!
I think my next Blackhawk will be a 45.
Damn 44s............... :)

Interesting that you guys have varied experiences, must be partially a personal thing. Besides calibers, I've found individual guns are kind of like that too. I have a friend that had a Walther PPK that he just could not hit anything with but I found his gun to be really accurate for me.

Yes, I've noticed that the .357 has more muzzle blast when using factory ammo. However, I've loaded up some safe but warm handloads in .44 magnum that were absolutely brutal.
I think the ammo makers hold back a bit with the .44.

I love the big S&W J Frame .357s, and no, I am in the crowd that feels like the .44 magnum is harder on the hand than the .357 or, get this, than my .500 Magnum.

The .500 has a wraparound grip, and the N frame is big and heavy - My .500 has the long target barrel on it, and thus the recoil, while significant (of course) is not as jarring on the hand. I reload my own and use 350 grain bullets, btw.

Shooting hot handloads from my friends .44 Mag made me chatter my teeth no matter how I braced for the shot!

All are fun, but the .357 is rather tame with a beefy wheel gun in my experience.

Going short-barrel in any magnum will step up the felt recoil and the flash-bang, and make the firing harder on the hand, again in my fairly limited experience.

I have several handguns in .357 and in .44, both single action and double action. I only shoot my reloads in each one and accuracy is normally my number one goal when developing a new load. To me the difference in recoil I feel is based as much on bullet weight as anything. I spent a lot of time thinking about John's question only considering guns that I own. I chose my S&W 686 because of it's accuracy with a variety of bullet weights and ease of concealment when necessary. My second choice was either my Ruger Single-Six with LR and Mag cylinders or this S&W 329. It's a handful with a heavy bullet over a lot of powder but with lighter bullets and moderate powder charges it is a lot of fun to shoot. I have worked up a heavy load "just in case" but most of the time shoot 180 gr JHP bullets.

I`m going to say the .44 magnum kicks less for me, even with the 3" barrel. I only shoot it DA, which seems to kick less than when I shoot it SA. The one gun I used to own that really seemed to kick, was a J frame S&W in .357.

I've often noticed the same thing. I also find the sharper recoil of a 9mm much harsher than the smoother recoil of a .45. I always thought it was just me.

Just one? 1911...:D

Hi tiburon -

Beautiful LBC - just outstanding. I could see how you would not want to let that one out of your hands.

What his thread proves is that we need to have a gathering where we can shoot!

That's for sure Andy! I want to shoot some of these great guns you guys have! Maybe the Buffalo in early May?!!?!?!

Glock 23
If you had solid cast bullets you could "theoretically" knock down a big critter. You could probably get a magazine of solid lead through the barrel before you had issues. I carry three magazines with 155 Speer gold
Dot. 2 magazines with 180 FMJ if I need to just punch holes.

Had a colt anaconda in 45 long colt. Could load it hot, or load it mild, and it was incredibly accurate. Of course in a moment of pure stupidity, I sold it. Really regret it, favorite handgun of all time for me. If i need a gun to trust the life on, got to go with a 40 caliber Glock. just what I know, and it always goes bang and where you want it to go.
