Just found out Buffer is still the most dangerous thing in shop (again)

Like everyone else I always preach the dangers of the buffer....for the second time, I have been bitten good by the bugger. Grabbed an almost finished skinner blade and threw it down through my shoe and into my foot. I figured everything was ok...just stung real bad. A minute of buffing later on I had the "oh crap" realization my foot was warm and squishy inside my shoe.

Took a shower to clean up and then off to the ER with my panicky wife. Shots, stitches, shots, meds, shots, bandages, etc and we eventually made it back to the house.

Be careful out there folks, cut up feet bleed badly.

Well at least your foot probably saved the tip of your knife. :p

Just kidding. Sorry to hear about the injury. Hope it heals quickly. :)

Thanks....I have had this buffer, oh, 17-18 years and this is only my second serious screw up with it. I plan on taping my hospital admission 'wrist band' to the top of the buffer to serve as a constant reminder!

no...probably gonna try to sneak out there, now that the wife is running errands. On second thought, might not be a good idea.....in a fog right now with the meds.

Ouch, Aflac is probably a good idea for a knife maker. I got Aflac cause it seems like every year I break a bone doing something.

If you don't post photos, it didn't happen.:D

Glad you are OK.

I don't have a buffer, but couldn't a person make up a plexiglass shield that would stand between you and the buffer? I'm picturing a curved head-to-toe guard that is narrow enough to reach around the sides of. It wouldn't provide 100% protection (exposed hands, arms and maybe feet depending on how it was designed), but it would add some shielding in case the buffer grabs the knife. Just a thought.

I'm glad your injury wasn't any more severe! It sounds thoroughly unpleasant enough as it was.

I had a student who presented the point of a blade to a grinder while at home, thank God. The grinder drove it through his foot, into a wooden floor. He had to wiggle the blade to free it from the floor, before pulling it from his foot. Crutches for a month. You were lucky!!

I'm with Brian. No buffer in the shop. Back when I had a career, I got bit by one in the shop at work. I was buffing this tiny (1"x1") block of Aluminum I'd just machined. I was carefully holding it low and away from me too. Buffer sucked it in and spit it straight out at me. Knocked me on my butt, saw stars, lost my breath. I had this perfectly shaped square bruise on my upper belly. I can't imagine if it'd hit my sternum. That was before knife #1, so it has always prevented me from trying to buff knives. I'd have been skewered for sure.

About the only things I buff anymore are my face shield (gets rid of the worst of the scratches so I can be cheap and not buy a new one:o) and cds and dvd's that get scratched. My buffer has paid for itself several times over on these items just in the last couple of years and I haven't caused myself any blood loss or unplanned hospital visits.

S BRANSON Thanks I just spewed coffee all over my screen.... LOL that was the funniest thing I have heard good humor.. GODDOGS I am sorry to hear about your misshap now I have to get me a pair of steal toe boots .

We tie a lanyard to our knives to anchor them to our wrists so they don't fall.

Would it be off the wall to suggest anchoring a lanyard to the table top or even buffer base while buffing? I'm sure there has to be guys out there doing this.

Ive had them bounce around my feet several times, but have been real lucky.Hope you heal up quick.

I shudder to think that someone might actually consider this a smart idea:eek:

in addition to using a tool that is extremely dangerous, and most knife guys seem to think needs to be several horsepower which is extremely overpowered (i use a buffer every day I make jewelry, I think mine is 1/2 hp or maybe 3/4 which is plenty of power to kill you if you are not smart with something sharp)
you are suggesting adding a lanyard which if it hangs up on something could inadvertantly cause a blade to jerk point first into a spinning wheel, and once the blade is thrown will cause it to whip around at unpredictable angles at high speed

please reconsider

Sheesh man, you're acting like I'm trying to get it added to the constitution. Personly I felt my statement was humble enough and portrayed as a theory as well as I know how. In any case, sorry if I offended.
